Growing Caladium Red Emersed in Singapore Setups
Caladium Red brings dramatic, paper-thin leaves washed with vivid crimson, one of the showiest foliage plants you can add to a humid display. It is a terrestrial tropical aroid rather than a true submerged stem plant, so we steer Singapore hobbyists towards using it emersed in paludariums, ripariums and vivarium land sections, where the tuber sits in moist substrate and the leaves rise into humid air. Our year-round warmth and humidity genuinely favour it.
Position it in moderate, indirect light to keep the red pigment strong without bleaching the delicate leaves. Plant the tuber in damp, free-draining substrate and keep the foliage clear of standing water to prevent rot. Our 27-29C ambient temperature suits this species without any heating, and the muggy air above an open-top scape replicates its native conditions closely. Treat it as a feature for the terrestrial zone, giving it space to unfurl its broad leaves above the waterline.
See more options in our stem-plants range for the submerged portions of your scape. Our paludarium step-by-step guide covers building the land section, and the guide to growing emersed plants explains the humidity and substrate this foliage prefers.
