Description
This Lagenandra from the south-west of India has not long been known as aquarium plant. In Europe, it is also found in trade under the name Lagenandra meeboldii “Pink”, but it differs from the plant traded under the same name in the USA. This Lagenandra looks a lot like a medium-sized wide-leaved Cryptocoryne. Under good light it has a nice orange-brown to pink leaf colour. It grows to 10 to 30 cm in height and has a spreading growth habit. Other than most crypts, it does not form underground runners, but has a thick rhizome. A nutrient-rich substrate is recommendable for Lagenandra meeboldii ‘Red’.
Lagenandra Meeboldii Red Care in Singapore Tanks
We carry Lagenandra meeboldii Red, a crypt-like aquatic from south-west India that brings broad, orange-brown to pink leaves to the midground. Unlike true Cryptocoryne, it does not throw underground runners but spreads slowly from a thick rhizome, so we treat it as a deliberate structural plant rather than a quick filler. In our Singapore tanks the warm 27-29C ambient suits it fully submerged without a chiller, and it adapts well once given time to root into a nutrient-rich substrate.
Plant the rhizome shallowly so it does not rot, anchor it to the soil, and give it good light to deepen the pink-orange tones. Like crypts, it can shed leaves after transplant as it adjusts to your water; this is normal melt, and fresh leaves usually follow if the rhizome stays firm. Our chloraminated tap water suits it once dechlorinated, and a root tab or two keeps growth steady over the months it takes to fill in.
Patience pays off with this rhizome plant. See our Lagenandra meeboldii Red care guide and crypt-style transplant melt fix, then browse related cryptocoryne live plants.
