Vallisneria Spiralis ‘Torta’ with its spiral leaves

The Torta form trades the long straight ribbons of standard vallisneria for tightly corkscrewed leaves that stay shorter and twist as they grow. We like it for medium tanks where ordinary vallisneria would overshoot the waterline; the spiralled foliage gives lively movement and texture in the mid-to-background without crowding the surface. Like all vallisneria it spreads by runners, knitting into a dense bed over time.

It is just as undemanding as its straight-leaved cousin, thriving in Singapore’s soft tap water once treated and in our year-round warmth with no heater required. It does well in low-tech setups and responds strongly to root tabs in inert gravel or sand. The same warning applies here: it reacts badly to liquid carbon and certain algaecides, which can cause it to melt, so keep dosing gentle.
