Buenos Aires Tetra Care Guide: Active and Surprisingly Tough
The Buenos Aires tetra (Hyphessobrycon anisitsi) is a large, robust and energetic tetra that brings movement and flash to bigger community tanks. With its silver body, red fins and tireless activity, it offers easy keeping and bold presence. This Buenos Aires tetra care guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers everything from diet to the one major challenge — their appetite for live plants.
Buenos Aires Tetra Overview
Buenos Aires tetras hail from the rivers of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. They are one of the larger tetra species, growing to 7–8 cm. Their silver body carries a faint blue horizontal line, and the caudal, anal and dorsal fins show attractive red colouration. With good care, they live for five to seven years — longer than most small tetras.
Tank Requirements
A school of eight or more Buenos Aires tetras needs at least a 120-litre tank. They are active swimmers that appreciate a long tank with good water flow. Maintain the temperature between 18 °C and 28 °C — they tolerate an exceptionally wide temperature range. Target a pH of 6.0–8.0 and GH of 5–20 dGH. This adaptability makes them one of the most forgiving tetras to keep.
The Plant Problem
Buenos Aires tetras are notorious plant eaters. They will devour soft-leaved plants like Cabomba, Hygrophila and stem plants overnight. If you want a planted tank, choose tough species they tend to leave alone: Java Fern, Anubias, Bolbitis and Bucephalandra. Alternatively, pair them with fast-growing floating plants like Salvinia or Amazon Frogbit, which can outpace the damage. Many keepers opt for a hardscape-only setup with rocks and driftwood.
Diet and Feeding
These tetras eat virtually anything. Offer a high-quality flake or pellet as the staple, supplemented with frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. Blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach and peas satisfy their herbivorous tendencies and may reduce plant nibbling. Feed twice daily and vary the diet to maintain health and colour.
Tank Mates
Buenos Aires tetras are boisterous and can intimidate slow or timid fish. Choose tank mates of similar size and temperament: larger barbs, rainbowfish, larger tetras, swordtails and medium-sized catfish like Corydoras and bristlenose plecos. Avoid delicate nano fish, long-finned species and shy bottom dwellers that may be outcompeted for food.
Breeding Buenos Aires Tetras
They are egg scatterers that breed easily. Condition pairs with protein-rich foods, then place them in a separate tank with spawning mops or fine-leaved plants (artificial ones work since they will eat real ones). Females scatter 500–2000 eggs during a vigorous spawning chase. Remove adults after spawning. Eggs hatch in 24 hours, and fry eat infusoria and baby brine shrimp once free-swimming.
Common Health Issues
Buenos Aires tetras are exceptionally hardy and resistant to most common diseases. Ich can strike after temperature shocks, and they may develop columnaris in severely neglected tanks. Their resilience makes them a solid choice for beginners who want a colourful, active fish that forgives mistakes in water chemistry.
