Dwarf Pencilfish Care Guide: Hovering Jewels for Nano Tanks
This dwarf pencilfish care guide introduces one of the most delightful and dainty fish available for nano and planted aquariums. The dwarf pencilfish (Nannostomus marginatus) is a miniature South American characin that reaches barely 3 centimetres, yet packs remarkable colour and personality into its tiny frame. At Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, we love recommending this species to hobbyists who want a living jewel for carefully aquascaped small tanks.
Species Background
Dwarf pencilfish are found throughout the blackwater streams and flooded forest areas of the Amazon basin, particularly in Guyana, Suriname and Brazil. They inhabit shallow, slow-moving waters rich in tannins, leaf litter and submerged vegetation. Their slender, torpedo-shaped body features bold horizontal black stripes interspersed with bands of cream and red. Males display more intense red colouration on their fins, particularly during courtship. Despite their diminutive size, they are surprisingly long-lived, often reaching four to five years in captivity.
Tank Size and Setup
A group of dwarf pencilfish can thrive in a tank as small as 30 litres, making them ideal for nano setups. However, 40 to 60 litres provides more stable water conditions and room for a larger group. Create a densely planted environment with fine-leaved species such as Java Moss, Riccia, Rotala and Bucephalandra. Include floating plants to diffuse lighting and provide a sense of security. Driftwood and leaf litter complete the natural blackwater aesthetic and release beneficial tannins. A gentle sponge filter provides adequate filtration without creating excessive current.
Water Parameters for Singapore
Dwarf pencilfish prefer soft, acidic conditions with a pH of 5.0 to 7.0, a temperature of 24 to 28 degrees Celsius, and a GH of 1 to 8 dGH. Singapore’s tap water can work but may benefit from softening through the addition of Indian almond leaves, driftwood or a peat filter. Reverse osmosis water remineralised with a GH booster is the premium approach for replicating their natural blackwater habitat. Whichever method you choose, consistency is more important than perfection. Perform gentle water changes of 15 to 20 per cent weekly.
Diet and Feeding
Feeding dwarf pencilfish requires attention to food size, as their mouths are extremely small. They accept finely crushed flakes and micro pellets, but frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, micro worms and cyclops are eagerly consumed and promote the best colouration. Live foods like vinegar eels and infusoria are particularly appreciated. Feed two to three small meals daily rather than one large feeding, as their tiny stomachs cannot hold much at once. Ensure food remains suspended in the water column, as pencilfish rarely feed from the substrate.
Behaviour and Social Dynamics
Dwarf pencilfish are peaceful shoaling fish that should be kept in groups of at least eight, with twelve or more being ideal. Males establish small territories and display to rivals with flared fins, but these interactions are harmless and fascinating to observe. They tend to hover motionlessly in the water column, occasionally darting to intercept passing food particles. This hovering behaviour is characteristic of the genus and gives them an almost ethereal quality in a well-planted aquarium. They occupy the mid-water to upper levels of the tank.
Tankmates
Given their tiny size and gentle nature, tankmates must be chosen with great care. Suitable companions include other nano species such as ember tetras, green neon tetras, pygmy corydoras, otocinclus and small shrimp like cherry shrimp or amano shrimp. Avoid any fish large enough to view pencilfish as prey, and steer clear of boisterous species that may outcompete them for food. A species-only tank is often the most rewarding approach, allowing you to appreciate their subtle beauty and social behaviour without competition.
Health Considerations
Dwarf pencilfish are generally healthy when kept in appropriate conditions but can be sensitive to water quality issues. They are particularly vulnerable during acclimatisation, so drip-acclimate new arrivals over at least an hour. Avoid sudden parameter swings, which can trigger stress and disease. Common ailments include ich and bacterial infections, typically linked to poor water quality or temperature instability. Their small size makes medication dosing tricky, so prevention through consistent maintenance is always the better strategy.
A Nano Tank Masterpiece
Few fish combine miniature proportions with such vivid colouration and engaging behaviour as the dwarf pencilfish. Watching a group hover among the plants, males flashing their red fins at rivals, is a genuinely captivating experience.
