Bubble Tip Anemone Care Guide: Hosting Clownfish in Your Reef
Watching a pair of clownfish nestle into the tentacles of a bubble tip anemone is one of those reef-keeping moments that never gets old. A solid bubble tip anemone care guide marine hobbyists can rely on starts with understanding that anemones are not corals — they move, they sting and they have a mind of their own. At Gensou Aquascaping Singapore, we advise keeping your tank stable for at least six months before introducing Entacmaea quadricolor, the species behind every bubble tip anemone in the trade.
Species Background
Entacmaea quadricolor is found throughout the Indo-Pacific and is the most commonly kept anemone in home aquariums. It comes in several colour forms — green, rose, rainbow and the rare black widow variant. Rose bubble tips are particularly popular in Singapore and typically sell for $30 to $80 depending on size and colour intensity. The characteristic bulbous tips are most pronounced under moderate lighting and stable conditions, though some specimens display elongated tentacles instead.
Tank Requirements
A minimum tank size of 75 litres is workable, but larger volumes of 150 litres or more provide greater stability. Bubble tip anemones need live rock with crevices to anchor their foot — they will not settle happily on bare sand. Ensure all powerhead intakes are covered with foam guards or mesh, because a wandering anemone caught in a pump is a disaster no reefer wants to experience. Secure your overflow slots as well if you run a sump system.
Lighting and Placement
Bubble tips host zooxanthellae and depend heavily on light for energy. Provide PAR levels of 150 to 300 at the anemone’s position. Under quality LED fixtures, mid to upper tank placement usually hits this range. The anemone will move on its own to find a spot it likes — this roaming phase can last days to weeks. Once it settles, avoid disturbing it. If it consistently moves to a shaded spot, your lighting may be too intense.
Water Parameters
Pristine, stable water is non-negotiable. Maintain salinity at 1.025, alkalinity between 7.5 and 9.0 dKH, calcium at 400 to 440 ppm, temperature at 25 to 27 °C and undetectable ammonia and nitrite. Nitrate should stay below 10 ppm. Singapore’s soft PUB tap water is ideal for mixing saltwater with a quality reef salt, but always treat for chloramine with a dechlorinator that neutralises both chlorine and chloramine.
Hosting Clownfish
Not all clownfish host bubble tip anemones immediately. Ocellaris and percula clowns are the most commonly kept species in Singapore, and while they host BTAs in the wild, captive-bred individuals sometimes take weeks or months to recognise the anemone. Patience is key. Avoid forcing the interaction — the clownfish will find the anemone on its own terms. Once a pair bonds with a BTA, the relationship is endlessly entertaining.
Feeding
Feed your bubble tip anemone one to two times per week with meaty foods such as raw prawn pieces, mysis shrimp or silversides. Cut food into pieces no larger than the anemone’s oral disc. Target-feed by placing the food directly on the tentacles with tweezers. Well-fed BTAs grow faster and split more readily, which is the primary way they reproduce in captivity. A bubble tip anemone care guide marine keepers trust always emphasises consistent feeding alongside stable water quality.
Splitting and Propagation
Bubble tip anemones reproduce asexually by splitting, often triggered by good health rather than stress — though sudden parameter shifts can also cause splitting. A split produces two smaller anemones that each grow back to full size over several months. Splitting BTAs are highly tradeable in Singapore’s reef community, and many hobbyists on Carousell offer splits from established colonies.
