Toadstool Leather Coral Care Guide

Towering above the rockwork with hundreds of tiny polyps waving in the current, the toadstool leather coral is one of the most iconic soft corals in the marine hobby. Understanding toadstool leather coral sarcophyton care is straightforward, which is precisely why this species appears in so many beginner reef setups across Singapore. At Gensou Aquascaping Singapore, we regularly recommend Sarcophyton species as a first soft coral — they are forgiving, grow steadily and add impressive scale to any tank.

Species Overview

Sarcophyton is a genus of soft corals in the family Alcyoniidae, commonly called toadstool or mushroom leather corals. The colony forms a thick, leathery stalk topped by a broad cap from which feathery polyps emerge. Colour ranges from cream and tan to green and yellow-green under actinic lighting. Specimens are widely available at Singapore marine shops along Serangoon North Avenue 1 and online through Carousell, with small colonies starting around $15 to $30.

Placement and Flow

Toadstool leathers appreciate moderate, indirect flow. Enough current to gently sway the polyps keeps the coral clean and promotes gas exchange, but direct powerhead blast causes the polyps to retract and the cap to fold. Place the coral on a stable rock in the mid to upper section of the aquascape where it has room to expand. A mature toadstool can grow its cap to 20 cm or more, so plan for future size when choosing a spot.

Lighting

These corals adapt to a wide PAR range, from 80 to 250, making them versatile inhabitants. Under moderate light they grow steadily; under higher intensity they tend to develop richer green fluorescence. If you are running a standard LED fixture in the 100 to 150 PAR range at the coral’s position, you are well within the sweet spot. Photoacclimate new specimens over one to two weeks to avoid stress.

Water Parameters

Standard reef conditions suit toadstool leathers well: salinity at 1.025, temperature at 25 to 27 °C, alkalinity between 7.5 and 9.0 dKH. Because they are soft corals without a calcium carbonate skeleton, their demand on calcium and alkalinity is minimal compared to LPS and SPS. They tolerate moderate nutrient levels, with nitrate up to 15 ppm and phosphate up to 0.1 ppm posing little concern — useful in tanks that are still dialling in nutrient export.

Shedding and the Waxy Film

One behaviour that alarms new keepers is the periodic shedding cycle. Toadstool leathers retract their polyps and develop a waxy, mucus-like film over the cap. This is entirely normal — it is how the coral sheds debris, algae and detritus. The process can last a few days to over a week. Increased flow during shedding helps the film peel away more quickly. Resist the urge to manually remove the film, as this can damage the tissue beneath.

Chemical Warfare and Tank Mates

Toadstool leather coral sarcophyton care includes managing allelopathy. Leather corals release terpenes and other chemical compounds into the water that can inhibit SPS coral growth and irritate sensitive neighbours. Running activated carbon consistently and maintaining good skimming helps mitigate these effects. If you keep a mixed reef with both SPS and soft corals, carbon filtration is not optional — it is essential.

Fragging and Growth

Fragging a toadstool is simple. Use a sharp blade to cut a section of the cap, then secure the cutting to a frag plug with a rubber band or bridal veil mesh. The frag will attach itself within one to two weeks. The mother colony heals rapidly, often closing the wound within days. Toadstool frags are among the easiest to trade in the Singapore reef community because survival rates are exceptionally high.
