Freshwater Barracuda Care Guide: Ctenolucius hujeta Predator Tank
The freshwater barracuda, Ctenolucius hujeta, is a sleek Central American pike-characin that swims in coordinated shoals near the surface. This freshwater barracuda care guide covers the essentials of keeping and growing these hujeta gars in Singapore home tanks, where long rectangular footprints and steady live feeding are the deciding factors. At Gensou Aquascaping in Everton Park we have kept shoals of six and seen them shoot forward as one silver blur whenever guppies drop into the tank. Done right, this is one of the most dynamic freshwater predators available.
Species Overview
Hujeta grow to around 25 to 30 cm in captivity. The elongated jaw, silver flank, and dark tail spot are classic markers. They originate from the rivers of Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama, favouring clear, slow-moving water with dense bankside cover. Although often called barracuda, they are unrelated to the marine family and belong to the characin order alongside tetras and piranhas.
Tank Dimensions
Shoaling is non-negotiable, so plan for at least five individuals. The minimum footprint for a group of five is 180 cm long, 60 cm wide, and 50 cm tall, roughly 550 litres. Length matters far more than depth because these fish swim the upper third of the water column and use speed to hunt. Hexagonal or cube tanks do not suit them.
Tight-fitting lids are essential. Hujeta jump powerfully when startled, and an open-top reef-style display loses fish regularly in the first weeks. Clear acrylic lids with minimum 5 mm thickness are the Singapore standard, available from any aquarium fabricator at around 40 to 80 SGD per panel.
Water Parameters
Maintain pH 6.5 to 7.5, GH 4 to 12, and temperature 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Singapore PUB water fits naturally once dechlorinated. Unlike many South American species, hujeta tolerate moderately hard water without issue, making them friendlier than leaf fish or wild discus. Nitrates below 20 ppm. Frequent 30 per cent weekly water changes keep sensitive fry-raised specimens in colour.
A canister filter such as the Eheim Classic 2217 or a sump delivering six times turnover handles bio-load comfortably. Skim the surface with a spray bar angled toward the rear to avoid surface scum, as this species breathes partly from surface boundary interactions.
Feeding the Shoal
Juveniles accept live guppies, feeder shrimp, and eventually frozen krill and prawn after a month of training. Adults eat whitebait, prawn tails, and tweezer-presented mussel meat. Offer food two or three times daily in small portions so the whole shoal gets a fair share.
Avoid feeder goldfish. As with all long-term predator keeping in Singapore, a reliable frozen feed supply from the wet market combined with the occasional live treat is the cleanest diet. Vitamin-enriched pellets such as Hikari Carnivore Pro are accepted by well-adapted individuals after several weeks of mixed feeding.
Shoaling Dynamics
Kept solo or in pairs, hujeta become nervous and fast-jump from any angle. A group of six or more disperses dominance pressure and produces the characteristic polished silver wall behaviour. The shoal hunts cooperatively, with flanking runs at feeder fish that mimic marine barracuda tactics. This is the behaviour to aim for, and it only emerges at numbers.
Tankmates
Mix with peaceful mid-water fish too large to swallow. Silver dollars, large Congo tetras, and adult Corydoras sterbai all work. Severums and chocolate cichlids make peaceful larger tankmates. Avoid tiger barbs, which nip fins, and aggressive cichlids such as green terrors that bully at feeding time. Bottom-dwelling plecos complete the setup.
Singapore Availability
Hujeta barracuda appear regularly at Qian Hu, Seaview Aquarium, and sometimes Y618 Aquarium. Juveniles of 8 to 12 cm cost 25 to 45 SGD each, making a shoal of six affordable at around 180 SGD total. Buy from tanks where fish swim in the upper water column in tight formation. Fish resting on the substrate or isolated from the group usually have internal issues. Quarantine for three weeks in a bare-bottom tank with heavy aeration.
Health and Longevity
Well-kept hujeta live eight to twelve years. The most common ailments are skin abrasions from jumping into lids, fungal infections at feeding injury sites, and internal parasites from wild-caught stock. Dose levamisole and praziquantel prophylactically during quarantine. Watch for clamped fins, which almost always indicate water quality drift rather than disease.
