Goniopora Coral Care Guide: Flowerpot Coral Husbandry

Goniopora earned a terrible reputation in the 1990s when imports wasted away within months regardless of care. Two decades later, captive-propagated and aquacultured stock combined with better lighting and nutrition have made this goniopora coral care guide reef actually workable for dedicated keepers. At Gensou Aquascaping in Everton Park we see flowerpot corals thrive in systems where hobbyists accept that they are not SPS and stop starving them. Success comes down to feeding, stable nutrients, and patience during acclimation.

Quick Facts

  • Scientific name: Goniopora spp. (24 tentacles per polyp)
  • Care level: intermediate, feeding-dependent LPS
  • PAR range: 75-150, moderate output
  • Flow: low to moderate, indirect
  • Alkalinity: 8-9 dKH, Ca 420-440, Mg 1300-1400
  • Nutrients: nitrate 5-15 ppm, phosphate 0.05-0.1 ppm
  • Feeding: amino acids daily, Reef Roids 3x weekly

Goniopora Versus Alveopora

Count the tentacles. Goniopora shows 24 tentacles per polyp; Alveopora shows 12. That is the only reliable field test, because both look like colonies of miniature daisies on long stalks. Common Goniopora types in Singapore include the hardy green “stokesi” (actually a complex of species), red, and the pricier rainbow or bicolor morphs that fetch $200-400.

Lighting Requirements

Medium output works best — 75-150 PAR places most colonies on sand or the lower third of the rockwork. Too much light causes polyp retraction and eventual bleaching; too little means slow starvation of the zooxanthellae. Blue-dominant reef spectra bring out the fluorescent tips most Goniopora colour morphs display. Ramp lighting over 14 days when introducing a new colony to your display system.

Flow and Placement

Indirect, moderate flow is ideal. The polyps should sway gently rather than whip or fully retract. Place Goniopora on the sand bed or on a flat rock platform with enough space for polyps to extend fully — mature colonies can open to 20-25cm across. Do not position near Euphyllia, Fish Pox, or chalices, all of which carry potent sweeper tentacles. Goniopora itself rarely stings neighbours but is easily burned.

Feeding Is Non-Negotiable

The old “starving Goniopora” reputation came from keepers treating it like an SPS. These corals feed heavily on zooplankton, phytoplankton, and dissolved amino acids. Feed Reef Roids or Coral Frenzy three times weekly by turning off flow and spot-feeding the colony. Dose amino acids (Red Sea Reef Energy AB+ or similar) daily. Oyster feast and Reef Chili add variety. A well-fed Goniopora polyp extends 4-7cm and stays inflated for most of the photoperiod.

Water Chemistry and Nutrients

Goniopora dislikes ultra-low nutrient systems. Keep nitrate between 5-15 ppm and phosphate 0.05-0.1 ppm. Tanks running zeovit-level stripping tend to see gradual Goniopora decline regardless of feeding. Alkalinity 8-9 dKH, calcium 420-440, magnesium 1300-1400. Consistency matters more than hitting any specific number.

Acclimation Protocol

Drip acclimate for 60-90 minutes. Dip in coral-safe solution for 10 minutes to remove pests. Place the colony low in the tank in an area of moderate indirect flow. Expect the polyps to stay retracted or partially extended for 7-14 days while the coral adjusts. Do not move the colony during this window — relocation stress is a leading cause of flowerpot coral failure in Singapore home tanks.

Fragging and Propagation

Goniopora is difficult to frag traditionally. The heavily-hydrated tissue tears easily. Aquaculturists use the “cheesegrater” technique or let colonies self-frag from rubble fragments that break off the main skeleton. For home keepers, the honest answer is that fragging is rarely worth the stress.

Singapore Sourcing

Aquacultured Goniopora from Bali farms is now the dominant import stream and significantly hardier than wild-caught stock of previous decades. Expect $30-60 for green stokesi, $80-150 for coloured morphs, and up to $400 for rainbow pieces at Serangoon and Pasir Ris reef shops. Always ask how long the colony has been at the shop — anything over two weeks and still fully extended is a reasonable bet.
