This 25 gallon planted aquarium setup guide takes you from empty rimless glass to a densely planted 95 L scape with CO2, aquasoil and tissue-culture plants — built specifically for Singapore’s warm ambient and PUB water. Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park runs two 25-gallon demo scapes year-round so you can judge plant behaviour in local conditions before committing.

Why 25 Gallons for Planted

At 61 x 30 x 51 cm, a 25-gallon gives you a true aquascaping canvas — enough depth for layered composition, enough volume (95 L) for parameter stability, yet small enough that CO2, lighting and fertiliser costs stay reasonable. A good starter size after graduating from nanos.

Lighting for High-Tech Plants

For carpeting plants like Monte Carlo and Glossostigma, target 60-80 PAR at substrate. Chihiros WRGB II 60 (SGD 320 at C328 Clementi) or Twinstar 600EA (SGD 380 at Green Chapter Jurong West) both deliver. Budget builds run Week Aqua P600 (SGD 180) and still achieve solid carpets with 7-hour photoperiods and disciplined CO2.

CO2 Injection System

Pressurised CO2 is non-negotiable for lush scapes. 2 kg disposable (SGD 65 at Polyart, SGD 45 Shopee) or refillable 3 kg (SGD 120 cylinder + SGD 12/refill). Pair with an ADA-style dual-stage regulator with solenoid (SGD 280-420) and a ceramic diffuser or inline atomiser. Target drop checker green (30 ppm CO2) 1 hour before lights on.

Drop Checker Placement

Mount on the opposite corner from the diffuser. Green = 30 ppm CO2, yellow = overdosed, blue = needs more. Check it daily for the first 3 weeks.

Aquasoil Substrate

ADA Amazonia v2 (SGD 48/3 L) at 4-5 cm depth across the whole tank, sloped higher at the back. Budget alternative: Tropica Plant Soil (SGD 38/3 L) at Green Chapter. Avoid mixing brands mid-layer — aquasoil bacteria communities differ. Plan on 9 L for a standard 25 gallon, 12 L for aggressive back-slope.

Hardscape Composition

One hero stone rule — a single dominant Seiryu or dragon stone piece at the 1/3 golden ratio, with supporting mid-sized rocks flowing toward the other corner. Seiryu at SGD 6/kg, dragon stone at SGD 5/kg from Nature Aquarium Gallery Thomson Road. Scrub in RO water before planting to remove clay dust that spikes KH.

Plant Selection by Layer

Foreground: Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei) or Glossostigma elatinoides. Midground: Cryptocoryne parva, Bucephalandra Wavy Green, Anubias nana petite on wood. Background: Rotala rotundifolia, Ludwigia super red, Limnophila sessiliflora. See our easy aquarium plants Singapore list for beginner-safe picks.

Fertilisation Dosing

ADA Green Brighty Mineral, Nitrogen and Potassium daily (2 pumps each), or EI dry salts via our estimative index dosing guide. Track Fe and K weekly. Budget SGD 80/month for liquid ferts, SGD 15/month for EI.

Water Parameters and PUB Tap

Target pH 6.2-6.6 with CO2 on, GH 4-6, KH 2-4, TDS 180-220. PUB tap is soft and slightly acidic — add Seachem Equilibrium (SGD 32/600 g) at 0.5 tsp per 40 L to raise GH for healthy plant growth. Always dechlorinate with Prime.

Stocking for a Planted Scape

Light bioload keeps algae down. 15 chili rasboras, 8 Otocinclus vittatus, 15 Amano shrimp, 20 Neocaridina cherry shrimp. Avoid digging species like corydoras in densely carpeted layouts. Read shrimp in planted tanks before stocking.

Dry Start vs Flooded Start

Dry start method: plant carpets on damp substrate under cling film for 3-4 weeks before flooding. Near-zero algae risk. Flooded start: faster but needs tight CO2 and 50% weekly water changes for 6 weeks. See our dry start method guide.

Singapore Sourcing Summary

Tissue-culture plants: Nature Aquarium Gallery Thomson Road (SGD 12-16 per cup) and Green Chapter Jurong West (SGD 10-14, wide stock).
