This 29 vs 30 gallon tank comparison clarifies a confusion that trips up almost every HDB hobbyist: the two volumes are nearly identical (110 L vs 114 L) but the footprints, aquascape utility and species suitability differ dramatically. Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park demos both side by side so you can see the 15 cm length difference in person.

The Core Difference: Footprint

29 gallons standard is tall at 30 x 12 x 18 in (76 x 30 x 46 cm). 30 gallons is usually a “breeder” at 36 x 18 x 12 in (91 x 46 x 30 cm) or a “long” at 36 x 12 x 16 in (91 x 30 x 41 cm). Same volume class, three very different shapes.

Volumes Side by Side

29 gallon standard: 110 L filled. 30 gallon breeder: 114 L filled. 30 gallon long: 114 L filled. The 4 L difference is meaningless — choose on footprint, not gallon count. Empty glass weight around 20 kg either way; filled weight 135-145 kg.

Swim Length and Schooling

29 gallon at 76 cm length is the minimum for proper tetra schooling behaviour. 30 gallon breeder and long at 91 cm give tetras another 15 cm to stretch — more natural dart-and-regroup patterns visible. For fast species like danios or rainbowfish, 91 cm is the minimum we recommend.

Height Trade-Offs

29 gallon standard at 46 cm height suits midwater gouramis and angelfish juveniles. 30 gallon breeder at only 30 cm height kills angelfish and tall sword plants but gives cichlids unmatched territory spread. 30 gallon long at 41 cm splits the difference.

Width and Aquascape Depth

Breeder width is the hidden superpower: 46 cm front-to-back gives you true composition depth — background, midground, foreground all resolvable. 29 standard and 30 long are stuck at 30 cm, limiting you to flatter scapes. For ADA-style aquascaping, the breeder wins.

Light Penetration Note

46 cm depth in a 30 breeder is shallow enough for budget LEDs (Week Aqua P900 SGD 220) to reach carpet plants. 46 cm height in 29 standard needs stronger light (Chihiros WRGB II 60 SGD 320) to penetrate vertically.

HDB Floor Load

Both weigh 135-145 kg filled. 30 breeder spreads load over 0.42 m² (91 x 46 cm) — about 340 kg/m². 29 standard concentrates over 0.23 m² (76 x 30 cm) — about 615 kg/m². Both exceed HDB distributed live load of 150 kg/m² but are fine on proper cabinet stands over slab beams. Breeder is easier on flooring.

Stocking Differences

29 standard: 15 neon tetras, pair of dwarf gouramis, 8 cories, 6 otos. 30 breeder: double the cory group to 15 plus add a pair of apistogramma with territory breaks — 46 cm width lets two pairs coexist. 30 long: 20 harlequin rasboras and a pair of honey gouramis with amano shrimp.

Aquascape Style Fit

29 standard suits tall Dutch-style stem gardens and vertical nature aquariums. 30 breeder is ideal for iwagumi and ADA-style composition with strong foreground. 30 long suits mountain-and-valley triangular layouts leveraging the horizontal stretch.

29 standard 76 cm span: Chihiros WRGB II 60 (SGD 320) with 8 cm darker ends, or 90 cm fixture if affordable. 30 breeder/long 91 cm span: Chihiros WRGB II 90 (SGD 480) or Week Aqua P900 (SGD 220). 46 cm breeder width may need cross-tank spread — Twinstar 900EA (SGD 480) projects wider.

Filtration Is Nearly Identical

Both want 6-8x turnover (660-900 L/h). Eheim 2215 (SGD 240), Oase BioMaster 250 (SGD 380), or SunSun 603B (SGD 95 Shopee). Breeder benefits from dual outlet spray bars to move 46 cm width water column evenly.

Pricing Comparison in SGD
