75 Gallon Cichlid Tank Setup Guide: Mbuna and Hap
This 75 gallon cichlid tank setup guide is tailored to Singapore keepers building Lake Malawi Mbuna and Hap communities. Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park has set up African rift displays for collectors across HDB and landed homes, and a 48 x 18 x 21 inch 75 gal is the textbook footprint for 12-18 Malawi cichlids.
Why 75 Gallon Suits Malawi Cichlids
Mbuna are territorial, and Haps need open swimming lanes. The 48-inch length gives enough real estate for multiple rock pile territories and a central sand swimming zone, which reduces aggression spikes. See our dimensions guide for exact measurements.
Water Chemistry Targets
Lake Malawi runs pH 8.0-8.4, KH 10-15, GH 12-20, temperature 25-27 degC. PUB tap water in Singapore sits around pH 7.6-7.8 with moderate KH, so aragonite substrate plus crushed coral in the filter buffers pH upward naturally. No chemical boosters needed long term.
Aragonite Substrate
Use 20-25 kg of CaribSea Aragamax or Seachem Arag-Alive, 4-5 cm deep. It dissolves slowly to maintain KH and pH. Flat open sand floor is essential: Mbuna sift and Haps like to cruise low. Avoid dark inert gravel; it fights the buffering system.
Rockwork and Territory Design
Aim for 25-35 kg of Texas Holey Rock, lace rock, or local limestone from Polyart quarry offcuts. Build three distinct piles with caves at the back and sides, leaving 60% of the floor open. Silicone or use egg-crate base to prevent avalanches when fish dig.
Rock Sourcing Tip
Green Chapter Jurong West and Iwarna Aquafarm stock aquarium-safe Holey Rock at $8-$14 per kg. Polyart offcut limestone runs $2-$4 per kg but requires vinegar testing to confirm reactivity.
Recommended Mbuna Stocking
Yellow lab (Labidochromis caeruleus) 1M:3F, Cynotilapia sp. “hara” (Acei) 1M:3F, Melanochromis auratus 1M:2F, Labeotropheus fuelleborni 1M:2F. Total 12-14 fish. Overstocking moderately disperses aggression; understocking paradoxically increases it.
Alternative Hap Community
Placidochromis electra (Deep Water Hap) 1M:2F, Copadichromis borleyi 1M:3F, Sciaenochromis fryeri (Electric Blue Ahli) 1M:2F, Protomelas taeniolatus 1M:2F. Larger, peaceful, stunning colour when mature.
Filtration
Malawi cichlids are high-bioload. Target 6-8x turnover, which is 1,700-2,200 L/hr. Run dual canisters (Eheim 2217 x 2, Oase Biomaster 350 + Fluval 407) or a sump. See our filter sizing guide for model comparisons.
Heating and Singapore Ambient
In non-aircon rooms, tank temp often sits at 28-30 degC. That is above ideal for Malawi but tolerable for Mbuna; Haps prefer aircon-regulated 26 degC. A 300W Eheim Jager is only needed if you aircon heavily. See our heater watts guide.
Diet and Feeding
Mbuna are primarily herbivorous: New Life Spectrum Cichlid Formula, Hikari Cichlid Excel, plus fresh spirulina. Haps accept carnivorous pellets and frozen mysis. Feed 2x daily, small pinches, no more than fish consume in 30 seconds.
Load Rating
A Malawi 75 with aragonite and 30 kg of rock pushes 380 kg filled. Over 0.55 sqm that is 690 kg/sqm, well past HDB’s 150 kg/sqm. Position over a load-bearing wall per our HDB load rating guide.
