Rock Flower Anemone Care Guide: Epicystis Crucifer Reef Safe

For reefers who want anemone colour without the risk of a clownfish-host wandering into a powerhead, the rock flower anemone is the answer. Epicystis crucifer stays put once anchored, ignores corals and other invertebrates, and comes in a kaleidoscope of pastel and neon morphs that look like reef jewellery. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers placement, feeding, the popular Indo and Caribbean variants, and how to start a rock flower garden in a nano reef.

The LRA Reef-Safe Reputation

Caribbean rock flowers — abbreviated LRA in the hobby — are genuinely reef safe. Unlike bubble tips and magnificas that wander or sting nearby corals, Epicystis crucifer grips its anchor rock and rarely moves once settled. The tentacles are short and stubby, the disc is flat, and the species lacks the long sweepers that produce coral burns. They are the only anemone genuinely recommended for mixed reefs containing SPS or LPS clusters.

Caribbean vs Indo Origin

True LRA stock comes from Florida and the Caribbean — collected legally under permit by divers. Indo rock flowers (sometimes labelled Phymanthus crucifer) look similar but tend to be larger, slightly aggressive, and lower-priced at SGD 25-60 versus the SGD 80-300 Caribbean LRAs. Colour saturation and base colour intensity is generally stronger in the Caribbean lineage. Look for the trademark crocheted-button mouth ring as an ID feature.

Lighting Tier

Rock flowers thrive at low-to-medium PAR, 80-200 µmol, which means substrate level or low rockwork. Higher intensity bleaches the disc and washes out neon colours. A single AI Prime HD or Kessil A360X covers a typical 60 cm nano reef. Use the actinic blue channel heavily — it makes the fluorescent green, orange and pink pigments pop under viewing.

Flow Requirements

They want low to moderate flow, around 5-10x display turnover with gentle random patterns. Strong direct flow folds the disc and causes the anemone to detach and wander. A Tunze 6020 or Maxspect Gyre on the lowest random setting works well. Position rock flowers in flow shadows behind the aquascape rocks. Find compact wavemakers in the aquarium equipment range.

Substrate vs Rock Anchoring

Despite the name, LRAs prefer to anchor their foot down between rocks or in the seam where rock meets sand. Drill a small cup or pocket in a flat rock and place the anemone with the foot facing the cup. Within 24-48 hours it wedges in and stays. Sand-only placement works in deep beds over 5 cm but the anemone will sometimes burrow until only the disc is visible.

Feeding for Colour Retention

Rock flowers eat aggressively. Spot-feed twice weekly with mysis, krill or chopped silverside. The disc folds around the food and digests within 30-60 minutes. Colour retention depends heavily on protein intake — underfed LRAs fade their neon pigments within months. Reef Roids on a coral feed day adds a top-up.

Water Parameters

Standard mixed reef numbers: salinity 1.025, alkalinity 8-9 dKH, calcium 420-440 ppm, magnesium 1320-1380 ppm, nitrate 5-15 ppm, phosphate 0.03-0.10 ppm. They are forgiving of slightly higher nutrients than SPS and tolerate the small swings of a young reef. Use a quality salt mix from the water care range.

Building a Rock Flower Garden

The signature display use of LRAs is a multi-colour cluster — a dozen anemones in different morphs occupying a flat shelf or sand bed area. Allow 5-7 cm spacing between specimens; LRAs do not sting each other badly but compete for feeding traffic. A garden of ten Caribbean LRAs in a 200-litre nano runs SGD 800-2500 depending on morph rarity. Watermelon, ultra rainbow and bullseye morphs sit at the high end.

Sourcing in Singapore

Aquamarin runs Caribbean LRA imports periodically, with batches usually announced via their Instagram. Iwarna stocks Indo rock flowers more regularly. Reef Discus Centre and Gensou rotate frags. Avoid Carousell listings without provenance — Caribbean LRA collection is permit-restricted and unscrupulous sellers sometimes mis-label Indo stock. Pair with frag plugs and feeding tools from the marine and saltwater range.
