Azolla Floating Pond Fern Care Guide: Mosquito Cover
Azolla is the smallest aquatic fern most pond keepers ever encounter, and one of the most useful in tropical Singapore. A managed azolla pond uses Azolla filiculoides as a fast-growing surface mat that suppresses mosquito breeding while fixing atmospheric nitrogen through its symbiotic Anabaena cyanobacteria. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers growth control, sun requirements and the seasonal colour shift from green to deep red that azolla performs under stress.
Why Azolla Suppresses Mosquitoes
Female mosquitoes need open water to lay rafts of eggs. A solid azolla mat denies that surface access. The dense 1-2 cm thick layer of overlapping fronds also smothers existing larvae by cutting off air contact. In Singapore where dengue control is a year-round concern, this is the species’ most quoted benefit.
Nitrogen-Fixing Symbiosis
Azolla houses Anabaena azollae cyanobacteria inside leaf cavities. The cyanobacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen and release it as ammonia, which the plant absorbs directly. A side benefit: harvested azolla makes excellent compost or chicken feed because of the high protein content. Asian rice paddy systems have used this trick for over a thousand years.
Coverage and Pond Sizing
Aim for 40-60 per cent surface coverage. Azolla mats grow extremely dense — at maximum cover, the mat blocks light to submerged plants and depletes oxygen overnight. Maintain a roughly two-thirds mat with one-third open water. Browse the pond equipment range for surface skimmers if you need to keep open water clear of azolla drift.
Growth Rate and Control
Doubling time is 3-7 days under good conditions — the fastest of any common pond plant. Net out surplus weekly. A 5-minute pass with a fine fish net keeps the mat balanced. Surplus azolla composts down quickly and adds nitrogen to garden beds; never release into waterways or reservoirs.
Red Colour Stress Response
Azolla shifts from green to brick-red under stress — bright sun, low nutrients, cool nights or crowding all trigger the colour change. The red form is more decorative and most pond keepers actively want it. Limit nitrogen-rich fertilisation and accept full sun exposure to maintain the red phase.
Sun and Climate
Full sun produces compact red mats; part shade produces lush green growth. 4-7 hours of direct light is the comfortable range. Singapore’s 28-32°C ambient suits azolla — the species copes badly only in cold climates below 15°C. Heavy monsoon rain temporarily breaks up the mat surface but recovery happens within 2-3 days.
Koi and Goldfish Compatibility
Most koi and goldfish ignore azolla, though some specimens nibble at the dense mats. The plant offers fry shelter during spawning and harbours microscopic invertebrates that fry feed on. Surface skimmers at full draw will pull azolla into the filter — turn the skimmer down or fence the mat with a floating PVC ring to keep coverage stable.
Water Chemistry
Azolla accepts pH 5.5-7.5 and prefers soft water. Singapore PUB tap at GH 2-4 fits perfectly. The water treatment selection at Gensou covers the dechlorinators needed before topping up evaporation. Avoid copper-based algicides — even residual concentrations kill azolla quickly because the symbiotic cyanobacteria are highly copper-sensitive.
Common Setbacks
Aphid infestations occasionally appear on azolla mats during dry weeks. A hose-down rinse pushes them into the water where pond fish dispatch them. Sudden mat browning usually traces to a chloramine spike from unconditioned top-up water — neutralise water before adding to the pond. Cold snaps below 15°C break the colony but local Singapore temperatures never reach those lows.
Sourcing in Singapore
Azolla is harder to find than water lettuce because most general nurseries do not carry it. Carousell aquatic-plant sellers list small portions for SGD 8-15. Specialist hobbyist trades inside Facebook pond groups offer free divisions if you bring a tub to collect. NParks-licensed aquatic nurseries sometimes stock it at SGD 12-20 per portion. A small starter colony of 50 g doubles to fill a 500-litre pond within 4-6 weeks.
