Betta Macrostoma Wild Care Guide: Brunei Beauty
For many wild-betta keepers, Betta macrostoma is the holy grail — a fish so striking and so geographically restricted that it has commanded premium prices in the hobby for forty years. Betta macrostoma hails from a handful of streams in Brunei and adjacent Sarawak, displays orange-red flanks against deep iridescent blue, and reaches 10-12cm as one of the largest wild bettas in the trade. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers care, the cool blackwater requirement, and the realistic cost of keeping the most legendary fish in the genus.
Origin and Restricted Range
Endemic to a small region around the Brunei-Sarawak border, with most wild populations within Brunei’s Ulu Temburong forests. The species is fully protected under Brunei law — wild collection is illegal, and the country requires CITES-equivalent permits for any export. Stock in the international hobby derives from a small founder population released in the 1980s and has been captive-bred ever since. Buying CB-only stock is both ethical and legally necessary.
Identification
One of the largest wild bettas at 10-12cm adult length. Males display a striking pattern — orange-red flanks, dark iridescent blue head and unpaired fins, with a black blotch behind the gill plate. The mouth is unusually large for a betta (hence the species name), reflecting paternal mouthbrooding. Females are duller chocolate-brown with the same dark gill blotch.
Tank Size
Larger than most wild bettas. A pair needs 100 litres minimum with footprint of at least 80x40cm. Build the layout from the aquarium tank range with smooth river-rock hardscape, dense planting, leaf litter and floating plant cover. The lid must be tight, weighted and gap-free — macrostoma are powerful jumpers.
Cool Blackwater Requirement
This is the husbandry feature that defeats most new keepers. Macrostoma comes from cool peat-stained forest streams at 20-24°C and struggles above 26°C. A chiller or aircon-room placement is mandatory in Singapore — without one, the species declines within months. Combine cool temperature with strict blackwater chemistry: pH 4.5-6.0, GH 0-3, KH 0-1, achieved with RO water and heavy tannin staining from ANS Catappa Leaves Small.
Filtration
Gentle flow with strong oxygenation. A canister at low flow with baffled outflow plus a small air stone suits well. Stock from the filter media range with biological media. Cool blackwater holds more dissolved oxygen than warm water, which suits the high oxygen demand of large wild bettas.
Diet
Carnivorous. Frozen mysis, bloodworm, krill and large brine shrimp form the staple. Live earthworms (well rinsed) and river shrimp are excellent variety. Most macrostoma refuse pellet food entirely. Feed adults twice daily, only what fish clear in 90 seconds. The species fasts naturally during male incubation periods, so reduced appetite during breeding is normal.
Mouthbrooding Behaviour
Paternal mouthbrooder with the longest incubation period of any betta — 30-35 days. After a wrap-style spawning the male collects eggs and incubates them in his throat for over a month, refusing food the entire time. Fry are 12-15mm at release and accept baby brine shrimp immediately. Males emerge dramatically slimmer; the keeper must protect them from female aggression and provide concentrated feeding immediately after release.
Tank Mates
Strict species tank. Bonded pairs are intolerant of any other fish. Even tank mates that work for smaller wild bettas (small loaches, peaceful rasboras) cause stress and breeding disruption. The investment in macrostoma demands a dedicated setup — accept this when buying.
Singapore Sourcing and Pricing
Among the most expensive wild bettas in the trade. Captive-bred pairs from Thai and European breeders run SGD 400-800; show-grade males SGD 350-600 each; F1 breeding pairs from established Singapore breeders SGD 800-1500. The Carousell wild-betta keeper community is the most reliable source. Always inspect in person and verify captive-bred origin before purchase. Budget another SGD 600-1000 for chiller, RO unit and proper setup.
