Betta Mahachai Wild Care Guide: Thailand Brackish Origin

Few wild bettas combine the colour intensity of a show splendens with the genuinely wild behaviour of an unmodified species — but Betta mahachaiensis manages exactly that, and once you have seen a male flare in jewel-green iridescence under tannin-stained water, the regular splendens trade looks faintly ordinary. Betta mahachai hails from the brackish coastal swamps of Samut Sakhon province in Thailand, and its salinity requirement sets it apart from every other betta in the trade. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers care, the brackish setup, and where to source ethical captive-bred stock.

Origin and Habitat

Endemic to a small region around Mahachai (Samut Sakhon) on the Gulf of Thailand coast. Wild populations live in brackish coconut-palm swamps and tidal back-streams with salinity around 1.005-1.010 specific gravity. Habitat loss from urban expansion has pushed wild populations to vulnerable status. All ethical Singapore stock should be captive-bred — wild collection is unsustainable and the species is now propagated reliably by Thai and Singapore breeders.

Identification

Adults reach 4-5cm — small for a betta. Males display a stunning jewel-green to turquoise body with iridescent scales and dark unpaired fins edged in metallic blue. The signature feature is the metallic green scaling that covers almost the entire body, distinguishing mahachai from the closely related B. splendens and B. smaragdina. Females are duller but still show iridescent flecks.

Tank Size and Setup

A pair lives comfortably in a 30-litre planted tank. Single males manage in 15 litres but the species displays best when housed as monogamous pairs in larger setups. Build with dense planting (Java fern, Cryptocoryne), floating plants for bubble-nest anchoring, and ample leaf litter. Use the aquarium tank range for a properly braced brackish setup. The lid must be tight — wild bettas jump.

The Brackish Requirement

This is the husbandry feature that distinguishes mahachai from every common betta. Add marine salt to achieve specific gravity 1.005-1.010 (roughly 5-10ppt salinity). Use proper marine salt mix, not table salt or aquarium tonic salt. Maintain salinity through evaporation top-ups with fresh water and salinity adjustments at water changes. Plants tolerant of light brackish conditions include Java fern, Anubias and Cryptocoryne ciliata.

Water Parameters

Beyond salinity, target pH 7.0-8.0, temperature 25-28°C, GH 8-15, KH 4-10. The brackish water itself buffers pH and adds mineral content. Tannin staining with ANS Catappa Leaves Small mimics native chemistry — the tea-coloured water from leaf decay is a key feature of mahachai habitat. Weekly 25 per cent water changes maintain stability.

Filtration

Gentle flow only. A small sponge filter or air-driven internal at low setting suits the species. Stock from the filter media range with biological media. Marine salt slows biological filter cycling slightly; allow 4-6 weeks for full cycling versus 3-4 weeks in freshwater.

Feeding

Wild mahachai accept frozen mysis, bloodworm, brine shrimp and live blackworm readily. Most refuse pellet food initially but condition onto micro-pellets after several weeks. Live food brings out the deepest jewel-green colour. Feed twice daily, only what fish clear in 60 seconds. The metabolism is fast at brackish-tropical temperatures.

Bubble Nesting and Breeding

Bubble-nesting paternal carer like splendens. Males build floating bubble nests under leaves or in the lee of floating plants. After spawning, the male tends eggs and fry alone for 3-4 days; remove the female after spawning to prevent aggression. Fry are tiny and need infusoria for the first week. Captive breeding is well established — buy captive-bred (CB) pairs from Thai breeders or via Carousell.

Singapore Sourcing

Wild-caught stock occasionally appears at Polyart and Iwarna at SGD 50-120 per pair, but ethical hobbyists buy captive-bred. Carousell wild-betta keeper community offers CB pairs from Thai and local breeders at SGD 60-150. Show-grade males from competition lines reach SGD 200+. Always quarantine new stock 21 days with brackish-tolerant medication before adding to a display.
