Acropora Valida Rainbow Strain Care Guide: Tabling SPS
Rainbow valida sits in the Goldilocks zone of SPS keeping: tougher than most colour acros, prettier than the workhorse stags, and capable of producing a tabling colony with three or four distinct hues across a single piece. Solid acropora valida rainbow strain care rests on stable lighting, moderate flow and consistent feeding rather than chasing extreme parameters. The team at Gensou Aquascaping in 5 Everton Park has grown this strain in display systems for years, and the notes below reflect what actually works in Singapore’s warm climate. Treat the targets as starting points rather than gospel.
Identifying True Rainbow Valida
The strain shows green tissue, blue radial corallites, purple branch tips and pink-orange undersides on a single colony. Lookalikes labelled rainbow valida often present only two of those colours; check several frags from the same source colony before paying the premium. Branch axial corallites are tall and prominent, distinguishing it from Acropora nasuta at first glance.
Lighting Approach
200-300 PAR with a blue-dominant spectrum brings out the strain’s full palette. Higher PAR pushes the green to lime and burns the purple tips. Acclimate fresh frags from the seller’s stated PAR, not from your peak placement; ask the shop about their lighting before purchase. Our best reef led light coral growth notes cover spectrum tuning.
Flow Patterns That Suit Tabling Growth
Rainbow valida grows into a low table or short staghorn depending on flow direction. Multidirectional turbulent flow at 25-30x turnover encourages tabling; constant unidirectional flow stretches the colony into a one-sided staghorn. Place mid-rock with at least 15 cm of clearance below for table expansion over the next year.
Nutrient Targets
Nitrate 3-7 ppm and phosphate 0.04-0.07 ppm produce the most saturated colours on this strain. It tolerates a wider band than Blue Tort, which is part of why beginners often start their colour SPS journey with valida. Monitor weekly and adjust feeding before reaching for GFO or carbon dosing.
Alkalinity and Calcium Stability
Alkalinity 8-9 dKH, calcium 425-440 ppm, magnesium 1320-1380 ppm. Valida is more forgiving of small swings than tort but still appreciates a steady dosing routine. Two-part or Balling automation provides better stability than manual dosing for any tank with significant SPS biomass; see our two part dosing guide reef tank for the implementation.
Singapore Cooling and Stability
Hold the tank at 24-26°C year round. Singapore ambient pushes uncooled tanks well past 28°C from May through August, which causes valida to brown out within two weeks. Budget for a 1/4 to 1/3 HP chiller depending on tank size, and place the chiller outside the cabinet for heat dissipation if possible.
Acclimation and Placement
Dip every new frag, glue to a low frag rack for the first week, and move up in 5 cm steps over a month until the coral sits in target light. Watch for tissue recession at the base, the most common early sign that the placement is too bright or that flow is hammering one side. Reposition rather than wait.
Feeding Rainbow Valida
Amino acids twice weekly and reef roids broadcast feeding once a week support the strain’s polyp extension and growth rate. Excessive feeding drives nutrient creep that dulls the purple corallite caps; restraint pays off in colour. Dose food with circulation pumps off for 15-20 minutes, then resume.
Pest and Disease Risks
Red bugs, Acropora-eating flatworms and red-flatworm AEFW all favour valida. Quarantine new frags for at least two weeks in a separate system, dip with Bayer or CoralRx and inspect the underside for AEFW egg patches before placement. Our red bugs on acropora treatment covers interceptor protocols.
Compatible Tank Mates
Reef-safe wrasses, anthias, tangs and clownfish coexist comfortably. Avoid butterflyfish other than the Chaetodon species rated reef-safe with caveats. Cleaner shrimp, ornamental crabs and snail clean-up crews pose no risk. Compatibility with peaceful angels like Centropyge is a coin flip; observe carefully.
Sourcing and Long-Term Tabling Goals
Authentic rainbow valida frags retail at $80-180 SGD in Singapore depending on size and provenance. Frag-swap groups on Carousell and Telegram occasionally list captive-grown pieces from established hobbyist colonies, which acclimate faster and carry less pest risk than wild imports.
A frag becomes a defined table at the 12-15 month mark with consistent care. Photograph the colony monthly under the same blue setting to track colour drift over time, which catches subtle nutrient or chemistry shifts before they become visible problems.
