Hints
The umbrella hairgrass, as it is also known, is a delicate grass for the background. It has been known in aquatics for a long time, but only thanks to wonderful aquascaping layouts has this swamp plant, which forms runners, caught the attention again. The plants create the best effect when planted in large groups behind a stone structure or with other delicate stem plants. The species name vivipara: viviparous, comes from the runners on the blade tips.
Growing Eleocharis Vivipara in Singapore Tanks
Umbrella hairgrass is one of the more forgiving background grasses we stock, and it suits the way most Singapore hobbyists run their tanks. At our ambient 27-29C it keeps pushing out its trademark arching, vivipary-style runners that spread upward from the parent crown. Plant the potted clump in small clusters across the rear third, anchoring the rockwool-rooted base into nutrient-rich substrate so the fine roots can establish before the plant starts throwing daughter shoots.
Light is the lever here. Under modest LED output it stays a leggy green wisp, but with brighter lighting and steady CO2 it fills in densely and develops that fountain-like silhouette aquascapers prize. Our chloraminated tap water is soft and slightly acidic once dechlorinated, which sits comfortably inside this species’ tolerance. Trim emerging runners that drift forward if you want a tidy backdrop rather than a sprawling thicket.
