What does aquasoil actually do?
Three things: buffers pH down to 5.8-6.5 from PUB tap’s 7.0-8.0, releases ammonia and ammonium for the first 14-28 days as a cycling fuel, and provides cation-exchange capacity for plant root nutrient uptake. The combined effect mimics blackwater Amazon and Southeast Asian biotopes ideal for tetras, shrimp and most planted communities.
How long does aquasoil last?
Nutrient release tapers off at 12-18 months for most brands; ADA Amazonia II often runs 24 months with regular root tabs. Physical buffering lasts 3-5 years before the substrate compacts and goes inert. Replace the active layer at the 18-24 month mark or supplement with root tabs from the fertiliser range.
How much ammonia does it leach?
1-4 ppm during the first 14-21 days. Premium brands like ADA Amazonia II push higher and longer; budget brands like Fluval Stratum leach less. Run the tank fishless during this period with daily 30 per cent water changes for week one. Test before stocking — premature livestock dies in the leach phase.
Can I reuse old aquasoil?
Yes, but with reduced effectiveness. Wash gently in tank water (never tap), break apart compacted clumps, and re-layer in the new tank. Reused aquasoil leaches less ammonia (good) but provides less nutrition (so dose root tabs heavily). Mix old and new 50:50 for an economy refill that retains some nutrient kick.
Should I rinse aquasoil before use?
Premium brands say no — rinsing removes nutrients. Budget brands sometimes need a quick rinse to remove dust. Pour gently into the tank using a plate or scoop to minimise breakdown. Aquasoil grains are fragile and crumble under harsh handling. Filling with water should also be gentle to avoid clouding.
Does it work without CO2?
Yes, but the high-tech benefits diminish. Low-tech aquasoil tanks still benefit from buffered soft water and root nutrition. Pair with anubias, crypts, java fern and slow stems. Carpets like Monte Carlo need CO2 regardless of substrate. The investment is justified for the water chemistry alone.
How thick should the layer be?
5-8 cm in the planting zone, 3-5 cm at the front for visual layering. Thinner layers run out of nutrient sooner and limit root development. Stem plants need 6 cm minimum; carpet plants 4 cm. Remineralise with Salty Shrimp Bee Mineral GH+ at every water change to maintain GH 4-6, KH 0-1 for shrimp tanks.
Is aquasoil safe for shrimp?
Yes, and many Caridina crystal shrimp keepers prefer it because the soft acidic conditions match their natural water. Wait until ammonia leach phase ends before adding shrimp — typically day 28-35. Check daily during the wait. Cherry shrimp tolerate the leach phase better than crystal shrimp but should still wait until ammonia hits zero.
