APONOGETON ULVACEUS

This tuberous plant from northwest Madagascar comes highly recommended for aquariums. It is easy to cultivate; it just needs to be given enough space. The scalloped leaves are highly decorative and are best presented in a subtle scheme – for example combined with Mayaca bog moss. A. longiplumulosus can live for many years in an aquarium environment. During rest periods it stops growing, but after a few months it does start to produce new leaves. There is no need to remove the bulb from the aquarium at any point.

Aponogeton Ulvaceus as a Singapore Centrepiece Plant

Aponogeton ulvaceus is a bulb plant from Madagascar prized for its translucent, wavy, fresh-green leaves that ripple in the current like underwater ribbons. Grown from a tuber, it makes a dramatic single specimen for the mid or background of a larger planted tank, where it can spread its broad leaves without crowding. It is genuinely eye-catching and a favourite for keepers wanting one bold focal plant.

Give it space and a nutritious substrate, since the bulb feeds heavily during active growth; a root tab near the base helps in leaner setups. Many Aponogeton species cycle through a natural dormancy, slowing or dropping leaves before flushing fresh growth, so don’t bin the bulb if it pauses.
