Crinum calamistratum from West Africa is a very graceful bulbous plant with dark-green, very narrow leaves.
The curly leaves becomes 40-120 cm long. It forms smaller bulbs than the other Crinum-species, and requires less light.
In the aquarium plants that are thriving form a number of small bulbs.
It is not eaten by herbivorous fish. It can also be used in brackish aquariums with low salt concentrations.

Keeping Crinum calamistratum healthy in Singapore aquariums

Crinum calamistratum is one of the more forgiving large plants we sell, and its dark, curly ribbon leaves make a striking background statement in taller display tanks. When planting the bulb, we always leave the upper third proud of the substrate so the crown can breathe; bury it fully and the bulb tends to rot. It is a slow establisher, so resist the urge to move it once roots take hold, as disturbance sets it back weeks.

This is a genuinely undemanding choice for local low-tech keepers. It tolerates our soft, slightly acidic tap water well and doesn’t need intense light or CO2 to thrive, though it appreciates root feeding through the substrate. Because it can reach 40cm or more, plan for its mature height before you commit it to a smaller HDB-sized tank. Herbivorous fish generally leave the tough leaves alone, which makes it useful in mixed community setups.
