Hints

RED STAR LUDWIGIAAnother fabulously coloured Ludwigia is Ludwigia glandulosa. Intense red stems become apparent during emersed greenhouse cultivation. Submerged leaves are claret on both the upper surface and underside. This variety does not have as many branches as other Ludwigia varieties, which is why we recommend arranging the stems in rows. These plants must have very good lighting and an adequate supply of CO2. Ludwigia are best displayed in combination with light green plants.

Growing Dennerle Ludwigia glandulosa for Deep Red in SG Tanks

We recommend this Red Star Ludwigia to hobbyists who want genuine claret-red colour in the background of a planted scape. Unlike many Ludwigias, glandulosa branches sparingly, so we tell customers to plant the stems in tidy rows rather than expecting a dense bush. The narrow, wine-red leaves create a dramatic vertical accent, especially when set against bright green plants that make the red read even deeper across the back of the tank.

This is one of the more demanding stems we stock: holding that intense red requires strong lighting and a reliable CO2 supply, plus consistent dosing. Our local soft, slightly-acidic tap water suits it, and at ambient 27-29C no chiller is needed, but lighting is the make-or-break factor for colour. Trim and replant the tops to keep stands upright and full; the lower stems can go bare if shaded, so manage height as the group grows.

See our background plants range for pairings, and the Ludwigia care guide for the basics. To push colour, read why red plants aren’t red and our CO2 system guide.
