Echinodorus Bleheri (Broadleaf Amazon Sword) in Singapore

The broadleaf Amazon Sword is a fast-growing, easy background plant that has earned its place as a staple in local community tanks. Its wide leaves form a tall, bushy rosette that screens equipment and gives smaller fish a sense of cover. It copes well across a broad temperature range and is right at home in our warm 27-29C heaterless tanks, asking only for stable water and a decent root run to settle in.

Because it grows quickly, it draws heavily on nutrients, particularly through the roots. A nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tabs keeps the leaves large and green and prevents the yellowing and holes that signal deficiency. Plant the crown at substrate level without burying the growth point, and give it room, as a mature specimen can dominate the back of a tank. Trim spent outer leaves and propagate from the daughter plants it throws on flower stalks.
