Best Aquarium Background Posters and Films in Singapore

An aquarium background transforms the look of your tank by hiding cables, equipment and the wall behind it. The right background adds depth, enhances fish and plant colours, and completes the visual design of your aquascape. This aquarium background poster Singapore guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park reviews your options.

Why Use a Background?

Without a background, you see through the back glass to the wall, power cables, filter hoses and whatever is behind the tank. This destroys the illusion of a natural underwater scene. A dark background makes fish colours pop — neon tetras look twice as vibrant against black than against a white wall. It also reduces stress in skittish fish by eliminating reflections and visual disturbances from behind.

Types of Backgrounds

Solid colour poster (black or dark blue): The most popular choice among serious aquascapers. A matte black background creates the illusion of infinite depth and makes green plants and colourful fish stand out dramatically. Dark blue offers a slightly softer feel. These come as thin plastic sheets or vinyl rolls. Priced at $3–$10 depending on size.

Printed scene backgrounds: Two-sided posters with printed images — typically rock walls, underwater scenes or plant displays. One side is often a different design. These look good in casual setups but are less popular in aquascaping circles because they compete visually with the actual layout. $5–$15 per sheet.

Self-adhesive vinyl film: Similar to window tinting film, this applies directly to the back glass with water or application fluid. It produces the cleanest, most professional finish with no air bubbles or edges showing. Available in matte black, frosted and opaque white. $8–$20 per metre. The gold standard for rimless tanks.

Frosted/milky white: A frosted white background creates a bright, clean look that works especially well with backlighting. LED strip lights placed behind frosted film produce a stunning glowing effect that adds depth. This style is popular in modern aquascaping and competition tanks. The combination of frosted film and backlighting costs $15–$30 total.

3D foam backgrounds: Moulded foam panels that fit inside the tank, creating a realistic rock or tree root wall. They are impressive but take up internal tank space, are expensive ($50–$150), and can be difficult to clean. Best for cichlid tanks and paludariums where a natural look is the priority.

Application Methods

Poster method (tape): Simply tape the poster to the outside of the back glass using clear tape at the edges. Quick and easy but edges may peel and dust collects between the poster and glass. Good enough for casual setups.

Soap water method: Apply a thin layer of soapy water to the back glass, press the poster or film against it, and squeegee out air bubbles. The surface tension holds it in place permanently. No tape needed and no air gaps. This is the best method for vinyl films.

Glycerin method: Apply a thin coat of glycerin to the glass before pressing the poster on. Glycerin fills gaps and prevents air bubbles while being easy to remove later. Available cheaply at pharmacies.

DIY Painted Background

For the cleanest possible finish, paint the outside of the back glass with acrylic craft paint. Apply two to three thin coats of black or dark blue acrylic paint using a foam roller. Let each coat dry completely. The result is a perfect, bubble-free, permanent background. It can be removed later with a razor blade if needed. This method costs under $5 and produces the most professional result. Many competition aquascapers prefer painted backgrounds.

Where to Buy in Singapore

Background posters and films are available at most aquarium shops along Serangoon North Avenue 1, C328 at Clementi, and online on Shopee and Lazada. For self-adhesive vinyl, check DIY and signage supply shops — they often carry matte black vinyl at lower prices per metre than aquarium-branded products.
