Bristletooth Tomini Tang Care Guide: Reef Safe Algae Grazer

If reef-safe behaviour, a manageable adult size, and a relentless appetite for film algae matter more than showpiece colour, the tomini tang is probably the smartest surgeonfish choice for a medium reef. This bristletooth tomini tang care guide from Gensou Aquascaping in Everton Park, Singapore reflects years of stocking Ctenochaetus tominiensis into 250-500 litre systems where a sailfin or naso would never fit. Topping out near 16 cm, the tomini combines the detritus-sweeping habit of other bristletooths with a tolerance for smaller footprints.

Quick Facts

  • Scientific name: Ctenochaetus tominiensis
  • Origin: Indonesia, Philippines, Solomon Islands — Coral Triangle species
  • Adult size: 14-16 cm
  • Minimum tank: 285 litres (75 gallons), 120 cm length
  • Temperature: 24-27 degC, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4
  • Diet: film algae, diatoms, detritus; supplement with nori and herbivore pellets
  • Reef-safe rating: fully reef-safe, excellent with SPS, LPS, clams, and anemones

Identification and Colour

Body colour shifts from pale grey through deep indigo depending on mood and lighting, with a pale throat and yellow highlights on the dorsal and anal fin tips. The tail is often edged in yellow. Juveniles and adults look similar — no dramatic colour change to worry about. Healthy specimens show a rounded belly and active grazing from the moment they land in the dealer tank.

Tank Size — Why Tomini Wins for Medium Reefs

A 120 cm, 285 litre reef is genuinely enough for one tomini, which puts it in reach of most Singapore HDB aquarists. Pushing the minimum is reasonable here because the fish grazes methodically rather than cruising at speed. In larger tanks the tomini becomes bolder and spends more time in open water, but it is one of the few surgeonfish that looks content in a 300-litre reef.

Water Parameters

Standard reef parameters apply: 25-26 degC, dKH 8-9, calcium 420-440 ppm, magnesium 1300-1400 ppm. A chiller is essential given Singapore ambient. Nitrate under 10 ppm and phosphate under 0.05 ppm keep colour saturated; nutrient spikes show quickly as darkened body tones and reduced grazing.

Diet and Grazing Behaviour

The flexible comb-like teeth of Ctenochaetus are designed to sweep diatoms, film algae, and detritus from rockwork. A mature reef provides most of the nutrition. Clip nori every other day and offer a small portion of herbivore pellets or LRS herbivore frenzy once daily. Tominis take prepared foods readily — often from the first day, which sets them apart from flakier Acanthurus species.

Reef-Safe Rating and Compatibility

This is as reef-safe as surgeonfish get. SPS, LPS, zoanthids, clams, and anemones are all ignored. Compatibility with other fish is also excellent, though mixing with other bristletooths (kole, chevron) in anything under 450 litres usually leads to chasing. Tominis coexist peacefully with clownfish, royal grammas, cardinals, and small wrasses.

Quarantine and Common Issues

All tangs should be quarantined. A 30-day copper quarantine or tank-transfer method rules out ich and velvet. Internal parasites are less common than in Acanthurus, but a prophylactic prazipro dose during QT is still wise. Watch for HLLE — vitamin-enriched foods, stable temperature, and low nitrate keep it at bay.

Sourcing and Price in Singapore

Tominis are consistently available thanks to Indonesian and Philippine fisheries. Expect $60-90 SGD for a 7-9 cm specimen at Serangoon North or C328 Clementi. One of the better value-for-money surgeonfish in the local trade, and a fish we recommend to reefers stepping up from damsels to their first tang.
