Chevron Tang Ctenochaetus Care Guide: Hawaiian Bristletooth
The chevron tang is one of the few reef fish whose juvenile form commands a higher price than its adult. Bright orange with electric blue chevrons, a 6 cm juvenile Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis will slowly transition to a deep olive-green adult with rust-coloured striations over 18-24 months. This chevron tang Ctenochaetus care guide from Gensou Aquascaping in Everton Park, Singapore distils what we have learned keeping and rehoming this Hawaiian bristletooth since the early 2000s. Expect a calm, detritus-focused grazer rather than the macroalgae bulldozer that Zebrasoma species are.

Juvenile to Adult Colour Change
Buyers who expect the orange chevron pattern to stay for life are often disappointed. Colour shift begins around 10 cm, with chevrons fading and the body deepening to mossy olive. The transformation is gradual and irreversible. Our shop policy is to photograph each juvenile on arrival so the owner has a record of the full colour arc.
Tank Size and Aquascape
Although smaller than a sailfin, the chevron is a constant swimmer that needs open horizontal space in front of well-aquascaped rockwork. A 150 cm tank is the honest minimum; 180 cm gives the fish room without pushing bigger tank mates into corners. Leave generous gaps between rocks — the bristletooth rasps detritus from surfaces all day and benefits from access to every face of the aquascape.
Water Parameters for Hawaiian Endemics
Hawaiian reefs run slightly cooler than the Coral Triangle. Aim for 24-25 degC rather than 26-27 degC. Singapore hobbyists will need a properly sized chiller — a Hailea HC-300A or similar handles most 400-600 litre tanks in a non-aircon HDB living room. Keep nitrate under 5 ppm and phosphate under 0.03 ppm for best colour retention in the adult phase.
Diet — Why Bristletooth Differs
Unlike Zebrasoma, the genus Ctenochaetus has comb-like flexible teeth evolved for combing film algae, diatoms, and detritus from rock surfaces. Offer nori daily, but expect most grazing to happen on the rockwork itself. A mature tank with a developed biofilm is essentially a full-time buffet. Supplement with LRS herbivore frenzy or Rod’s Food herbivore blend three times a week.
Reef-Safe Rating and Compatibility
Chevron tangs are among the safest surgeonfish choices for a mixed SPS reef. They almost never nip corals and coexist well with clams. Avoid mixing with other Ctenochaetus species in anything under 750 litres — kole tangs and tominis will harass a newcomer. One chevron plus one Zebrasoma works well as a grazing pair in larger systems.
Sourcing and Pricing in Singapore
True Hawaiian-caught specimens became scarce after the 2020-2021 aquarium collection restrictions on the Big Island. Most chevrons in Singapore now arrive from Christmas Island or the Line Islands. Juveniles at 5-7 cm run $250-400 SGD; sub-adults are rarely available. Buy a fish that is actively grazing in the dealer’s tank and has a convex belly.
Health and Quarantine
Quarantine for 30-45 days with tank-transfer method or therapeutic copper. Chevrons are prone to HLLE if vitamins are skimped, and they occasionally present with internal flagellates — a metronidazole course during QT is cheap insurance. Once established, this is among the longer-lived surgeonfish in home aquaria, routinely passing the decade mark.
