Sailfin Tang Zebrasoma Care Guide: Large Algae Grazer

Few reef fish command a display tank quite like an adult sailfin tang with its dorsal fan fully flared. This sailfin tang Zebrasoma care guide draws on two decades of surgeonfish husbandry at Gensou Aquascaping in Everton Park, Singapore, where the species has become one of our most requested large grazers. Zebrasoma velifer (Indo-Pacific) and its close relative Zebrasoma desjardinii (Red Sea and Indian Ocean) are often sold interchangeably, yet both demand serious swimming volume and a mature algae film before they settle.

Quick Facts

  • Scientific name: Zebrasoma velifer (Pacific sailfin); Zebrasoma desjardinii (Indian Ocean)
  • Adult size: 35-40 cm in the wild, 25-30 cm in captivity
  • Minimum tank: 680 litres (180 gallons) for a single adult
  • Temperature: 24-27 degC, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4
  • Diet: primarily herbivorous — marine algae, nori, spirulina, occasional meaty supplements
  • Reef-safe rating: reef-safe with caution; may nip large-polyp stony corals if underfed
  • Lifespan: 10-15 years with good husbandry

Species Identification and Origin

Pacific sailfins show five vertical body bands fading to a yellow tail, while Red Sea Desjardins display finer white spotting and stronger facial striations. Most specimens reaching Singapore are wild-caught juveniles from Indonesia, the Philippines, or the Maldives, imported through Jurong wholesalers and retailed at C328 or the Serangoon shops. Expect to pay $120-180 SGD for a 7-10 cm juvenile and upward of $300 SGD for show-quality adults.

Tank Size and Swimming Space

Horizontal swimming length matters more than volume for any Zebrasoma. A 180 cm tank is the practical minimum; 210 cm gives the fish room to cruise without pacing the glass. Our display build for a Bukit Timah client runs 240 x 75 x 70 cm, and the resident sailfin patrols every reef bommie without a single glass-surf episode. HDB owners should check floor loading before committing to anything over 500 litres filled.

Water Parameters and Filtration

Stable reef parameters are non-negotiable. Target 24-26 degC, which usually means running a chiller year-round in Singapore ambient conditions. Nitrate under 10 ppm, phosphate under 0.05 ppm, and a skimmer rated for at least 1.5x tank volume keep this heavy feeder clean. Because sailfins graze constantly, biological load is higher than the weight suggests — plan for 10x turnover and supplemental carbon dosing if nuisance algae flare.

Diet and Feeding Routine

A sailfin tang is a grazing machine. In the wild it browses filamentous and fleshy macroalgae across the reef flat, moving every few seconds. Clip nori sheets to a magnetic holder twice daily and supplement with spirulina pellets, LRS herbivore blend, and the occasional mysis. Pale body colour, pinched stomach, or HLLE (head and lateral line erosion) almost always trace back to inadequate herbivore input. Vitamin-soaked foods twice a week reduce the risk.

Reef-Safe Rating and Tank Mates

Sailfins are among the more reliable reef-safe tangs, rarely picking at SPS or soft corals when well fed. LPS such as acans or chalices are occasionally nipped if the algae film runs thin. House only one Zebrasoma per tank unless the footprint exceeds 250 cm — two sailfins in a smaller system will fence with their caudal spines until one is lost. Pair with clownfish, wrasses, anthias, and a small bristletooth for varied grazing coverage.

Health, Quarantine, and Common Issues

Tangs carry a high risk of marine ich (Cryptocaryon) and velvet. A 45-day copper quarantine in a bare 120 litre tub is standard practice before the fish enters any display. Watch for HLLE, fin clamping, and scratching against rockwork. Stable temperatures and vitamin-enriched feeds prevent most of the chronic issues we see at the shop.
