Description

Beckett’S Cryptocoryne

Sri Lanka is home to many species of cryptocoryne, including the Cryptocoryne beckettii.
These plants have also been successfully cultivated in aquaria for decades.
In the wild they are found in shaded areas near the banks of streams and rivers, where they grow amphibiously above and below the waterline.
The colour of any submerged leaves varies in shades of green and brown.
Different leaf colouration within the same species is typical for the Cryptocoryne genus.

Hints

Cryptocoryne beckettii: a dependable midground crypt for SG aquariums

Beckett’s water trumpet is one of the most forgiving Sri Lankan crypts we stock, which makes it a sensible pick for first planted tanks in Singapore homes. It tolerates the harder, alkaline parameters that some local tap supplies trend toward, and it copes happily at our typical 27-29C without a heater. The submerged foliage shifts through olive, bronze and brown depending on light, so two plants from the same batch can look pleasingly different in your scape.

We plant it singly into a nutrient substrate with a root tab, then leave it be. Like all crypts it may shed older leaves after transfer while it converts to submerged growth and adjusts to your water; trim only the mushy outer leaves and let the rosette re-establish. Over months it spreads by runners into a tidy clump that suits the midground of a 30-60cm tank.

See our broader Cryptocoryne care guide and, if leaves drop early, our melt recovery walkthrough. Find companion species in the Cryptocoryne live plants collection.
