Description
Cryptocoryne x purpurea is a rarity from Southeast Asia.
It is a natural hybrid between Cryptocoryne griffithii and Cryptocoryne cordata.
The variety described here comes from Borneo and has remarkable marbling on the leaf blades.
The growth is significantly slower than other Cryptocoryne species that are well known in aquatics.
Growing to a height of around 10 cm (previous experience of cultivation in an aquarium), it remains relatively small in size and, depending on the size of the tank, can therefore also be used in the foreground.
As with all Cryptocorynes, a nutrient-rich substrate is very important, as a lot of nutrients are absorbed by the roots.

Hints
Cryptocoryne x purpurea: a marbled rarity for SG collectors
This natural Borneo hybrid is a collector’s crypt, prized for the marbling across its leaf blades and its compact stature of around 10cm. That smaller size means it works in the foreground or midground depending on your tank, and its slow pace keeps maintenance minimal. It prefers softer, slightly acidic water, which suits hobbyists running aquasoil and the soft tap supply many of us have here, and it sits comfortably at our ambient 27-29C without a heater.
As with every crypt, a nutrient-rich substrate is the priority because the bulk of its feeding happens through the roots; we always tuck a root tab beneath the crown at planting. Being slower and less common, give it a settled, low-traffic spot and avoid uprooting it once established. Expect a quiet adjustment period after transfer while it converts to submerged growth.
