Description

The genus Lagenandra is very closely related to the Cryptocorynes and colonises similar habitats. Lagenandra meeboldii is a very varied species and the variety ‘Red’ is a wonderfully colored plant for the midground. Until now most species in the genus Lagenandra were unsuitable for aquariums, however this new plant from India does impressively well in an underwater landscape. Here they also form a strong rhizome like the Anubias, but they should be planted into the substrate. With its striking color this Indian beauty makes a great feature in a plant aquarium.

Lagenandra meeboldii ‘Red’ Care in Singapore

Lagenandra is the close cousin of the Cryptocorynes, sharing the same slow, steady, undemanding temperament that makes both genera so dependable in Singapore tanks. This Indian species’ ‘Red’ variety brings warm reddish-bronze tones to the midground, and like the crypts it grows from a creeping rhizome. Plant it with the rhizome at the substrate surface and the roots tucked in, then leave it alone, because Lagenandra resents being uprooted and shuffled around.

It handles our soft, slightly acidic chloraminated tap water comfortably once dechlorinated, and tolerates our 27-29C ambient range without a heater. Expect a settling-in period where older leaves may melt; this is normal as it adjusts, and new submersed leaves soon follow. It does not need CO2, though stable conditions and moderate light keep the colour strong. Patience is the main ingredient with this genus.

Because care overlaps so closely, our Cryptocoryne care guide applies directly, and our melting after rescape guide helps with the transition. See related species in our Cryptocoryne live plants range.
