Aquarium plant from tissue culture in closed cup.
Japanese Takashi Amano has inspired many aquarium owners to keep the 1-5 cm tall cosmopolitic liverwort, Riccia fluitans, submerged.
It can be kept down by tying it to a stone with a piece of fishing line, but new shoots always grow towards the surface, so it may be necessary to prune it with scissors.
Riccia fluitans thrives best with added CO2 and in good growing conditions small oxygen bubbles form on the leaf tips. As a traditional floating plant it offers good protection for young fish.

Riccia fluitans: The Classic Pearling Carpet for SG Aquascapers
Riccia fluitans is the bright green liverwort Takashi Amano made famous as a submerged foreground, and it remains a favourite among SG aquascapers chasing that vivid, bubbly look. We supply it in tissue culture, so it arrives clean and free of pests and algae. Naturally it floats, but tied down to stone or mesh with fishing line, it forms a dense, glowing carpet that throws off streams of oxygen bubbles in good conditions.
The trade-off is maintenance: Riccia has no roots and constantly grows toward the light, so new shoots push upward and need regular trimming with scissors to stay flat. It rewards CO2 and strong lighting with that signature pearling, and our warm 27-29C water poses no problem. Left untrimmed it eventually detaches and floats free, where it still does a fine job sheltering fry and shrimplets.
