Growing Buchephalandra Velvet Crocodile in Singapore tanks

We love how forgiving this velvet-leaved Bucephalandra is for local hobbyists. Because it draws nutrients from the water column through its rhizome rather than from substrate, you simply tie or glue it to wood or rock and leave the rhizome exposed. In most HDB and condo tanks running at 27-29C ambient, it sits comfortably without a chiller, and its slow pace means it rarely outgrows a nano scape or demands constant trimming from you.

Our soft, slightly acidic Singapore tap water suits it well once dechlorinated, since this plant dislikes hard, alkaline conditions. Keep light low to moderate to discourage algae on the dense velvet foliage, and a little liquid fertiliser keeps new leaves coming. Avoid burying the rhizome, which is the single most common cause of rot we see returned to us. Patience is rewarded with deep, textured growth that anchors shaded corners beautifully.
