US Fissiden (Fissidens fontanus), is a North American aquatic moss that has recently been gaining popularity in the freshwater aquarium hobby. This plant is a very fluffy, lush green plant that will attach to most surfaces and can eventually grow into a large mat of impressive size. Like many similar plants, it provides refuge for shrimp and fish fry and makes for an attractive and useful grazing area for shrimp. It can be easily attached to driftwood and rockwork. It is slow-growing and requires low to moderate light. US Fissiden is a very easy plant to keep without much extra care, but like all plants, it can benefit from CO2 supplementation, although this is not required. Like many mosses, it does not typically respond positively to most chemical plant supplements. Many aquarists report success with this moss purely through keeping a well-maintained aquarium with no supplementation.
Attaching Fissidens Fontanus on a Pad
Supplied ready-grown on a 5x5cm pad, this US Fissidens takes all the fiddly tying out of establishing a moss. You simply set the pad where you want it, wedge it under hardscape or pin it down, and let the fluffy fronds spread outward into a lush green mat. We find this format ideal for local nano and shrimp tanks, where the dense moss becomes prime grazing ground and a safe nursery for shrimplets and fry.
Fissidens is an undemanding epiphyte that does not need a special substrate, drawing what it needs from the water column. It stays compact and slow-growing, so it rarely overruns a scape. Our warm ambient water is acceptable, though Fissidens, like most mosses, looks its tidiest with cooler, well-oxygenated, flowing water; gentle current also keeps detritus from settling in the fronds and clouding their colour.
