An attractive, relatively small Java fern variant found at a brackish water location on the island of Panay (Philippines). It has a striking bullous leaf structure and a fresh green colour. It is as undemanding as other Java fern variants. Rather hard to come by in trade these days.
Java fern ‘Philippine Mini’ for nano aquascapes in SG
This compact Philippine Java fern variant, collected from Panay island, is prized for its bullous, puckered leaf texture and fresh green colour on a relatively small plant. We recommend it for nano and mid-sized scapes where a full-size Java fern would overwhelm the layout. It is genuinely hard to come by, so we are glad to stock it for local collectors who want something a little different from the usual epiphytes.
Care matches the rest of the family, and that is its great appeal: it is as undemanding as any Java fern. Attach the rhizome to wood or rock, keep that rhizome above the substrate, and give it low to moderate light, no CO2 needed. Singapore’s warm 27-29C soft tap water suits it without a heater. Its smaller scale means slower growth, so resist crowding it and let the textured leaves develop.
