Proserpinaca Palustris (Mermaid Plant) in SG Aquascapes
Proserpinaca palustris, often called Mermaid Plant, is a distinctive stem species whose finely serrated, comb-like leaves shift from green to a coppery orange-red under strong light. We recommend it to Singapore aquascapers who want an unusual texture and warm colour as a mid-ground accent. The saw-edged foliage adds a spiky contrast that breaks up the rounded leaves of more common stems.
This one rewards effort: bright lighting, CO2, and a good nutrient supply bring out both the tightest leaf form and the most intense reddish tones, while in dimmer tanks it stays green and lankier. It transitions through a different leaf shape as it converts from emersed to submersed growth, so be patient after planting. In our warm local tanks it grows at a measured pace that makes it easy to position.
Trim and replant the tops to encourage a denser, bushier stand over time. See our Proserpinaca palustris care guide and tips on growing red aquarium plants, and browse more in our plants range.
