Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow’: A Reliable Fern for SG Tanks

The “Narrow” leaf form of Java fern is one of the easiest plants we stock, and a favourite for local hobbyists who want greenery without fuss. Its slimmer leaves sit at a gentler angle than the standard variety, giving a finer, more refined texture on driftwood and rock. As an epiphyte it should never be buried in substrate; instead tie or glue the rhizome to hardscape and let it attach naturally over a few weeks.

It is genuinely undemanding in our conditions. Java fern tolerates warm 27-29C water, soft slightly acidic tap water, low to moderate light and no added CO2, making it ideal for heaterless HDB and condo tanks and for keepers who travel. Growth is slow, so it rarely needs trimming, and it even shrugs off most herbivorous fish. Watch for occasional black spots, which usually signal the plant is propagating via plantlets.
