Using ANS Bacterhome Rods in Singapore tanks

These porous ceramic rods are a workhorse biological media we recommend for canister and sump setups across Singapore. The deep, interconnected pore structure gives beneficial bacteria a vast surface to colonise, which is what keeps ammonia and nitrite in check as your tank matures. In our warm 27-29C climate bacterial colonies establish and stay active year round, so a well-stocked rod chamber does a lot of quiet work between water changes for community, planted and arowana tanks alike.

Rinse the rods only in old tank water, never under chlorinated tap, so you do not wipe out the colony you have built. Slot them after your mechanical sponge or wool so debris does not clog the pores prematurely. Local tap water is soft and slightly acidic, and this media will not swing your pH, which suits shrimp and soft-water fish keepers who want stability rather than constant correction.
