Description
Salvinia auriculata is a cosmopolitan floating fern, 1-3 cm that grows quickly if there is sufficient nutrition and light. Light leaves are a sign of a shortage of micronutrients. It tends to shade light from the plants at the bottom. Salvinia varieties have small hairs on their leaves, making them water resistant.
Helps prevent algae by shading parts of the aquarium and using nutrients in the water. Grows very big in the wild and in optimum conditions. A decorative plant for open aquariums.
Dennerle Salvinia Auriculata TC: Floating Cover for SG Aquariums
We supply Salvinia auriculata as tissue culture so it arrives clean and free of snails or algae, ready to scatter across an open-top tank. This fast-growing floating fern carries tiny water-repellent hairs on its leaves and multiplies quickly when light and nutrients are plentiful. Hobbyists use it to soften the harsh tropical light over a Singapore tank, dim algae growth below, and give surface-dwelling fish and bettas a sense of cover and security.
Because it grows so fast in our warm 27-29C water, the main job is thinning it. Skim out handfuls regularly so it does not blanket the surface and starve plants below of light, and so gas exchange stays healthy. Pale, washed-out leaves signal a shortage of micronutrients rather than too much light, so a little fertiliser usually greens it up. It works best in open tanks; tight lids and dripping condensation can scorch the floating fronds.
