Hygrophila serpyllum as a Singapore carpet plant

Hygrophila serpyllum is a low, fast-spreading stoloniferous plant that creeps along the substrate via runners, making it a useful and slightly unusual foreground choice for local aquascapers tired of the usual carpeting suspects. Supplied as a 1-2-Grow! tissue culture cup, it arrives clean and pest-free, so you can split it into many small portions and dot them across the front of the tank to speed up coverage.

It carpets best with medium light and CO2, staying low and tight; under weaker light it tends to climb and lose that flat habit. In our warm 27-29C water the high growth rate means you’ll be trimming regularly to keep the mat dense, and trimmings replant readily into bare spots. Good circulation across the foreground helps it stay clean, since slow-moving warm water encourages algae on a low carpet.

Browse our other foreground plants to compare carpeting options. For technique, see our guide on planting carpet plants and our advice on growing a carpet without CO2 if you run low-tech.
