Description

Eriocaulon cinereum has a wide distribution in the warm areas of Asia, Africa and Australia where it occurs in wet, temporarily flooded places. This quite small Eriocaulon develops a compact, hedgehog-like rosette with narrow, rigid leaves. Under water it has a silvery green hue. Not rarely it develops its hat pin-like inflorescences.
We recommend strong lighting, rather soft water, a type of Aquasoil as substrate and good CO2 supply (about 20-30 mg/L).
With its special, exotic appearance, Eriocaulon cinereum works best as an accent plant in the foreground to midground, in an open place.

Caring for Eriocaulon Cinereum in SG Aquascapes

Eriocaulon cinereum forms a tidy, hedgehog-like rosette that makes a striking accent in the midground of a detailed aquascape. We rate it as more demanding than the average foreground plant, so it suits hobbyists ready to run a high-tech setup. It naturally occurs across warm parts of Asia, which means our ambient 27-29C water suits it well, and the species genuinely prefers the soft water Singapore taps provide once conditioned.

The two things it really wants are strong light and a nutrient-rich substrate, since Eriocaulon feed heavily through their roots. CO2 injection is close to essential for compact, healthy rosettes and good colour. Like many in this genus it can melt back after planting before pushing fresh growth, so resist the urge to disturb it; give the roots time to establish in the aquasoil and new silvery-green leaves will follow.
