Pearl Gourami: An Elegant Centrepiece for SG Community Tanks
The Pearl Gourami is one of the most graceful labyrinth fish in the hobby, with a lacy pearl-spotted body and, on mature males, a warm orange-red breast that deepens during display. They are generally peaceful and make an excellent centrepiece for a calm, well-planted community tank. As a labyrinth species they gulp air at the surface, so they tolerate the lower oxygen of warm water better than many fish, which suits Singapore conditions nicely.
These gouramis appreciate a planted tank with some surface cover and gentle flow, since their long pelvic feelers and flowing fins fare poorly in strong current or among fin-nippers. Singapore’s soft, slightly acidic tap water and warm 27-29C ambient suit them well, and most tanks run heaterless. Give them tall plants and dim, dappled lighting to bring out their colours and confidence, and keep tankmates similarly peaceful to avoid stressing them.
