Growing Homalomena Sp Red in Singapore Tanks
Homalomena is a slow, undemanding aroid that behaves much like Anubias in the home aquarium, and we find it a reliable choice for hobbyists who want colour without a high-tech setup. Its reddish, sturdy leaves hold up well in our warm 27-29C tanks, and because growth is gradual it rarely outpaces a simple maintenance routine. Treat it as an epiphyte: tie or wedge it onto wood or rock rather than burying the rhizome.
Like other aroids, the rhizome must stay above the substrate or it tends to rot, so we attach it to hardscape with thread or glue and let the roots grip over a few weeks. It tolerates low to moderate light and does not strictly need CO2, though injection deepens the red tones. Keep it away from snail-heavy or boisterous tanks where the rhizome gets dislodged, and dose a gentle liquid fertiliser.
New arrivals can shed a leaf or two as they adjust to your water; this melt usually passes once roots establish. Browse more options in our live plants range, and see our Anubias-style aroid guide and notes on plant melting stages before you panic.
