Money Plant Variegate (Pot) as a Nutrient Filter

The variegated Money Plant is a marbled pothos used in aquariums as an emersed plant, with its roots trailing in the water and the leaves growing out above the surface. In that role it excels at stripping nitrate and other nutrients from the water column, which directly helps starve nuisance algae. The hanging root curtain doubles as cover and a grazing surface for shrimp and small fish, while the foliage stays safely out of reach of herbivores.

It’s one of the most forgiving plants we stock, perfectly suited to Singapore’s warm, humid air and happy in modest light. Drape the roots over a filter outflow or tank rim and trim back the vine to keep growth dense. Keep the variegated leaves above water; submerging them causes rot, so only the roots belong in the tank for reliable, long-term nutrient export.
