Nuphar Japonicum var. Rubrotinctum for Planted SG Tanks
This reddish-toned variant of the Japanese spatterdock is prized for its colourful submerged leaves, which bring warmth and contrast to a green-dominated aquascape. It grows as a rosette from a central crown, so plant it with the crown sitting just above the substrate and let the roots anchor below. In our warm Singapore tanks it establishes well once settled, and a nutrient-rich substrate or a root tab tucked underneath helps it hold its red tones and push fuller growth.
The colour responds to light, so brighter conditions tend to deepen the red, while shadier spots keep it greener and more subdued. It makes an excellent solitary midground specimen where its leaf shape can be appreciated, rather than crowded among stems. As a fast nutrient feeder it also lifts nitrate from the water column, working with your filtration to keep things clear between changes.
