Using Caladium ‘Freida Hemple’ in Singapore Paludariums

Caladium ‘Freida Hemple’ is admired for its bold heart-shaped leaves splashed with deep red centres and green margins, a striking foliage plant that thrives in warm, humid conditions. It is a terrestrial aroid rather than a fully submerged aquatic, so we recommend it for paludariums, ripariums and the emersed sections of vivariums where its roots sit in damp substrate and its leaves stay above water. Singapore’s naturally high humidity actually suits it well, often better than drier climates.

Plant the tuber in moist, well-draining substrate and position it under moderate, indirect light to keep that red colouration vivid without scorching. Our ambient 27-29C is comfortable for this tropical species, and the warm, humid air above an open-top paludarium mimics its preferred environment. Keep the foliage out of standing water to avoid rot, and give it gentle airflow. It is a feature plant for the land portion of a scape rather than a background stem in an aquarium.
