Macodes Petola Green: A Jewel Orchid for SG Terrariums
We carry Macodes petola, the lightning jewel orchid, famed for its electric gold vein network running across deep green leaves. It is a terrestrial, humidity-loving plant, so we recommend it for the emersed floor of a terrarium or paludarium rather than a flooded aquarium. Singapore’s warm, humid air suits it, though we still favour an enclosed display to hold steady moisture, since dry air-conditioned rooms quickly dull the foliage and crisp the leaf edges.
Use a chunky, free-draining mix kept evenly damp, and keep light soft and diffused; the famous veining shows best in low to moderate brightness, and harsh output simply bleaches it. Ambient indoor temperatures of 27-29C are comfortable without a chiller. We dechlorinate tap water before misting and many growers move to RO or rainwater for this prized species once it has rooted and is reliably producing new leaves from the crown.
