Nerite Snail vs Mystery Snail: Algae Eating, Size and Breeding

Nerite Snail vs Mystery Snail

Snails are among the most effective and low-maintenance algae cleaners you can add to a planted tank, but choosing between the two most popular options is not always straightforward. This nerite snail vs mystery snail comparison from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, Singapore breaks down the practical differences so you can pick the right gastropod for your setup.

Size and Appearance

Nerite snails (Neritina spp.) stay compact, typically 2 to 3 cm in shell diameter. They come in a wide range of patterns: zebra, tiger, horned, olive and red-spotted varieties are all common in Singapore shops. Mystery snails (Pomacea bridgesii) grow considerably larger, reaching 5 to 6 cm or more. Their round, apple-shaped shells come in gold, ivory, blue, purple and brown. If you want visual impact from a single snail, the mystery snail wins on size alone.

Algae Eating Ability

Nerites are the superior algae cleaners, full stop. They rasp green spot algae, diatoms and soft film algae off glass, hardscape and plant leaves with relentless efficiency. A single nerite can visibly clean a 30-litre tank within days. Mystery snails eat algae too, but they prefer decaying plant matter, leftover fish food and blanched vegetables. Rely on mystery snails for general cleanup rather than targeted algae control.

Impact on Plants

Neither species damages healthy plants, which sets them apart from many other snails. Nerites leave plant tissue untouched and focus entirely on surface biofilm and algae. Mystery snails occasionally nibble on soft, decaying leaves but will not attack healthy growth. Both are safe for delicate stems like Rotala and mosses. However, mystery snails are heavier and can topple poorly anchored stem plants simply by climbing on them.

Breeding and Population Control

This is the biggest practical difference. Nerite snails cannot reproduce in freshwater; their larvae require brackish conditions to survive. You will never face a nerite population explosion. They do, however, lay small white sesame-seed-like eggs on hard surfaces, which are unsightly and difficult to remove. Mystery snails lay large, conspicuous egg clutches above the waterline. The eggs are easy to spot and remove if you do not want babies, but left alone, a single clutch can produce 50 to 200 hatchlings.

Water Parameters

Both species prefer moderately hard, alkaline water for healthy shell growth. Nerites tolerate pH 6.5 to 8.5 and GH above 6. Mystery snails need similar conditions, ideally pH 7.0 to 8.0 with GH 8 or above. Singapore’s tap water tends toward the soft side (GH 2-4), so supplementing with crushed coral, cuttlebone or a remineraliser helps prevent shell erosion in both species. Calcium is critical; without it, shells thin and pit over time.

Lifespan and Care

Nerites live one to three years in aquarium conditions. Mystery snails have a similar lifespan, sometimes stretching to three years with excellent water quality and diet. Both are peaceful and ignore fish and shrimp. Mystery snails are more active and visible, often cruising the glass during the day. Nerites tend to work methodically across surfaces and are sometimes inactive for days at a stretch, which is normal.

Price and Availability in Singapore

Nerite snails cost $1 to $4 each depending on variety, with horned and red-spotted commanding the highest prices. Mystery snails range from $2 to $5 each, with rarer colour morphs like purple or jade green at the upper end. Both are stocked widely at Serangoon North area shops, C328 Clementi and online on Shopee and Carousell. Buy from clean tanks with no dead snails on the bottom, a sign of poor water quality or copper contamination.

Which One Should You Keep

For pure algae control in a planted tank, nerites are the practical choice. No population risk, relentless grazing and a small footprint make them ideal. For a community tank where you want a charismatic, visible cleanup crew member and do not mind managing potential offspring, mystery snails are more engaging to watch. Many hobbyists keep both, letting each species handle what it does best.
