ONF’s Flat Nano made the unusual jump from premium Korean design fixture to staple of Singapore’s serious nano-tank scene almost on word-of-mouth alone, and four years after launch it remains the design-led pick for 20 to 40 cm cubes where the light is part of the room. This onf flat nano led review from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park draws on twelve installs over two years, including a small refugium build where the Flat Nano + replaced a clip-on within a week. We will cover what justifies the premium, what does not, and where it sits against Chihiros’s nano-class fixtures.

The Form Factor That Defines It

The Flat Nano is a square pendant fixture roughly 11 cm across, finished in matte aluminium and designed to suspend rather than mount on the rim. The aesthetic is genuinely architectural; on a Mizu or Optiwhite cube it disappears into the room rather than sitting on it. Mounting kits are sold separately — the wood-grain hanger is the popular pick, and mounting on an Ikea picture rail with paracord is a common Singapore workaround.

Output and Coverage Reality

The Flat Nano delivers around 90 PAR at the substrate of a 30 cm cube at 25 cm depth, dropping to roughly 60 PAR at the corners. That is enough for low to mid-light planted scapes, anubias and bucephalandra builds, and shrimp colonies. It is not enough for HC Cuba carpets pushed to maximum density, where the Flat Nano + (a brighter variant) becomes necessary. Spread is moderate, suiting square footprints better than wide rectangles.

Spectrum and Visual Quality

ONF tunes the Flat Nano around 8000 K with a warm tint option toggled on the controller. Rendering on plants is excellent — colours read naturally, hardscape texture appears soft, and the unit is a favourite for photographing nano builds. Compared with the Chihiros C2 RGB at similar price, the Flat Nano renders with less visible colour cast.

Controller and App Behaviour

The Flat Nano uses the Storm app or its own desktop puck controller for ramped sunrise, midday and dusk. The controller hardware is the most polished in the class, with a tactile dial and clear LED feedback. Bluetooth pairing is reliable and schedule retention across power cuts is among the best we have tested. Our Bluetooth LED controller guide compares the alternatives.

Heat Management and Pendant Mounting

Pendant mounting is one of the Flat Nano’s quiet advantages. With the unit suspended 10 to 15 cm above water, surface heating drops to a fraction of a degree even at full output. For unchilled shrimp tanks during Singapore’s hot months, that thermal headroom is valuable. The 25 W draw means SP Group costs of around $1.90 per month at typical photoperiods.

Comparison Within the Nano Class

Against the Chihiros Vivid II Mini at 30 cm, the Flat Nano costs roughly 50 percent more but delivers significantly better controller polish, mounting flexibility and aesthetic integration. Against the WRGB II Slim 30, the Flat Nano gives less raw PAR but better visual quality. Against budget clip-on options for nano cubes, there is no real comparison; the Flat Nano is in a different category. See our clip-on nano light guide for the budget alternatives.

SGD Pricing and Sourcing

Expect $260 to $310 for the Flat Nano at Polyart and Y618, with the wood-grain hanger adding another $60 to $90. The Flat Nano + variant runs $340 to $390. Carousell second-hand units appear around $180 to $220, usually from hobbyists upgrading to larger fixtures. Stock is intermittent; if you find one in your size, it is worth committing.

Where the Flat Nano Disappoints

If you are running a wide rimless rectangle (60 cm by 30 cm, for example), the Flat Nano’s square spread leaves dim flanks. PAR ceiling is also moderate; serious carpet pushers will want the Plus variant or twin units. And the price is unambiguously premium — for the same money you can buy two Week Aqua P450s. The Flat Nano sells on design and quality, not bang-for-PAR.

Best Use Cases in Singapore

Design-led nano cube builds, kitchen counter shrimp tanks, bedroom display scapes and any installation where the fixture is visible as part of the room are where the Flat Nano shines. We specify it on roughly one in three high-end nano builds and have never had a client regret the choice. Pair it with a bucephalandra-only scape and the visual coherence is excellent.

Verdict

The ONF Flat Nano is the best-looking nano LED in the Singapore market, and one of the best-finished fixtures at any price. It is not the brightest, the cheapest or the most spec-rich; it is the most considered. For a nano cube you intend to look at every day, that matters more than the spec sheet suggests.
