Using ANS Coloured Sand in Your Singapore Aquascape
We see this coloured sand used most often as a decorative top layer or in nano display tanks where hobbyists want a clean, defined look rather than a natural earthy floor. It is an inert grain, so it will not push your parameters around the way an active aquasoil does, which suits our local soft, slightly acidic tap water well once dechlorinated. Rinse it thoroughly first, because fine coloured grains carry a lot of dust that will cloud the water on the initial fill.
For a roughly 1kg bag, plan a shallow bed of one to two centimetres across a small footprint, or use it as an accent path between rockwork. Because it is inert, root-feeding plants will need tabs underneath. In our 27 to 29 degree tanks the sand itself is unaffected by heat, though shallow beds can trap mulm, so we recommend a light gravel-vac pass over the surface during water changes to keep detritus from building up between the grains.
Browse the rest of our substrate range if you are weighing options, and read our fish tank sand types guide alongside our note on active versus inert substrate before committing to a full layout.
