Is it necessary to add an additional nutrient substrate such as JBL AquaBasis under JBL Manado, or do JBL Manado’s properties enable it to do without?
> JBL Manado itself doesn’t contain any fertilizer. JBL Manado is, however, able to absorb nutrients (especially trace elements) to supply to the plant roots.
For a good plant growth it is advisable to use JBL AquaBasis plus underneath JBL Manado.
JBL AquaBasis Plus as a Planted Tank Base Layer
AquaBasis Plus is a long-lasting nutrient base layer that goes underneath your main substrate when you first set up a planted freshwater tank. It carries plant nutrients including iron, while its clay components hold and release them as your roots demand, giving heavy root feeders a steady larder for years. We recommend it to Singapore aquascapers building a fresh layout who want strong growth without constantly chasing the substrate with extra dosing.
The trick is that this is a foundation, not a top layer. Lay it across the base, then cap it with a thick, well-rinsed layer of your chosen gravel or sand so the nutrients stay locked below and do not cloud the water column. In our experience a good cap also keeps fussy diggers and curious shrimp from stirring it up, which matters in the compact tanks many HDB and condo keepers run where every disturbance is visible.
